This cardigan knitting pattern is simple but was designed with knitted elements to add interest.

Interweave Knits Fall 2011 Pattern #1

The Gemini Cardigan by Katya Frankel

This knit sweater pattern was designed with ‘knitting interrupted’ in mind. Essentially, this is where pretty flourishes and intentional design elements are built into simple knits to add just enough detail to the finished cardigan sweater knitting pattern. This sweater is worked in one piece with minimal finishing, and uses tweaks in the classic stockinette stitch, an asymmetric collar, and simple garter stitch welts to add intrigue. A wide, off-center buttonband in garter stitch turns over to become a lapel on the right side and a revere collar on the left. What makes this knit sweater pattern so fun is the staccato lines of garter stitch that add structure and embellishment to the otherwise unadorned fabric. Join our knitters as they strive to customize the pattern to fit their style and unique shape.
This knit sweater pattern has unexpectedly wonderful lace motifs and easy layerability.

Interweave Knits Fall 2011 Pattern #2

Dahlia Cardigan by Heather Zoppetti

Discover unexpected lace motifs with this cardigan that is both whimsical yet functional. Heather borrowed doily construction techniques to pattern the intricate looking flower motif that adorns the back of the knit sweater pattern. Sleeves grow out of a simple rectangle for an easy layering, draping piece that is sure to become a staple in your wardrobe. The lightweight alpaca and cotton blend used in this cardigan sweater knitting pattern give the long fronts swingy movement and seasonal flair. Follow along with our knitters to see how the customized and personalized this beautiful cardigan knitting pattern.

Strategies for knitting the perfect fit for you:

Read through to learn how to construct a knit sweater pattern for your body type: See how the garment is constructed, study the schematic for how the pieces fit together, and look carefully at the variety of images.

You're looking for key areas of fit. Have a friend measure across the back of your shoulders; compare this to the schematic. If you pick a size where this measurement is too wide, the cardigan sweater knitting pattern will not fit securely on your frame; too narrow a measurement and the top will be too tight, thus taking away the beauty of the pattern.

Next: Compare your bust measurement to the finished bust measurements and add at least two inches of positive ease. Find the size in the pattern that most closely matches both the shoulder width and your bust measurement.

Bonus! Now you have two years of Interweave Knits fall cardigan knitting patterns to help design the perfect fit for you!

Interweave Knits Fall 2010 Pattern #1 (top left): Cloissonné Jacket by Deborah Helmke
Deborah Helmke journeys from stranded colorwork's geometric roots to fluid, vividly organic patterning in the Cloissonné Jacket. Knitted in one piece to the armholes, a simple shape provides an unbroken canvas for the colorwork motif. A dainty lace edging and a petite rolled collar create a clean, elegant frame. The body of this cardigan knitting pattern is worked flat in one piece to the underarms; a circular needle is used to accommodate the large number of stitches. This piece also incorporates both lace and Fair Isle knitting techniques.

Interweave Knits Fall 2010 Pattern #2 (top right): Leyfi Pullover by Rosemary (Romi) Hill
Inspired by the radiating motifs of lace doilies and classic Icelandic yoke construction, Romi Hill knits the Leyfi Pullover from the top down in graduated tiers of lace leaves that provide circular yoke shaping as they grow. A strand of fuzzy cashmere laceweight held with a lofty merino single creates a refined tweedy effect with lush texture. This knit sweater pattern is sure to be a wardrobe staple for years to come!

Interweave Knits Fall 2010 Pattern #3 (bottom left): Breacan Swing Coat by Gwen Bortner
The Breacan Swing Coat by Gwen Bortner works both vertical intarsia stripes and horizontal ones, always with two yarns held together. Mimicking a true woven tartan, strands of color meet and move away from each other to create solid areas and marled ones. The designer offers this word of advice: "The best trick I used was knitting in both directions (or knitting backward as some call it). That way the yarns get significantly less tangled and I didn't have to lift and turn the large piece of work." Wrap yourself in luxury with this fabulous cardigan sweater knitting pattern!

Interweave Knits Fall 2010 Pattern #4 (bottom right): Chiral Cardigan by Coralie Meslin
Coralie Meslin knits the Chiral Cardigan from the bottom up and from side to side, exploiting different types of drape and flow. A lofty woven yarn creates a fluid fabric that can fall into both soft gathers and dense ruffles without sacrificing structure. Add your own flavor with the 7/8 inch buttons of your choosing. Discover the fun and challenge in cardigan knitting patterns with this gorgeous showpiece.
