Begin by reading through the entire cardigan, sweater, or pullover knitting pattern so you get a sense of the design. See how the garment is constructed, study any charts provided, and visualize how each individual piece of the pullover/cardigan knitting pattern will fit. By studying the pattern closely you can begin to recognize the key areas of fit that you will want to customize to your unique shape.

Next, have a friend measure across the back of your shoulders; compare this to the schematic.
