Will You Be One of Three Lucky Knitters?

Nov 30, 2007

This could be YOU in YOUR LYS!

We interrupt this broadcast of the Knitting Daily/Interweave Knits Winter 2007 Gallery Series to ask you this all-important question:

What would you buy if someone gave you $300 to spend at your local yarn shop?

This is not a theoretical question, my yarn-loving friends. This is For Real. Interweave Press is giving away gift certificates for a shopping spree at the yarn shop of your choice. Three of you lucky folks will win one of the following in a random drawing: first prize wins a $300 spree, second prize wins a $200 spree, and third prize wins a $100 spree.

(Go enter the contest. Then come on back to share a few good Yarn Fantasies with the rest of us.)

All right, now that you know it's a REAL question, let me repeat it so you can start thinking about what you would do with your winnings:

What would you buy if we gave you a $300 shopping spree at your favorite local yarn shop? How about a nice $200 spree? Or a $100 spree?

Be still my heart.

What would you choose?

Well, no. Not be still MY heart, because I, as Knitting Daily Ringleader, cannot, of course, enter the drawing, not even under a false name. (Think about this. Every local yarn shop owner from here to Estonia has my photo. There's no way I could sneak in with one of the Yarn Spree gift certificates and try to pass myself off as Someone Not Sandi. Especially not when I headed straight for the anything-silk-and-purple section. Right there, I'd be caught red-handed. Or rather, purple-handed...)

But for the rest of you: Be still your hearts. Imagine it. A gift certificate for $300 is in your hand, and the entire yarn shop is your oyster.

A girl can dream, though. Even though I can't enter the drawing, I can live vicariously through all of you. Tell me what your shopping spree would be like, and why your local yarn shop is the best one there is.

Next week: The Ivy League Vest Gallery, and more!

What's on Sandi's needles? Six inches of the Gathered Pullover; a pair of socks on two circulars with partial heel flaps, and six inches of the hood of my husband's cabled hoodie.

I'd waiver between asking them to order some specialty yarns (for the Icelandic Shawl, a red hat bag and hat set for my mum, and some beautiful yarn for a very guy afghan for my boyfriend) and running amok adding to my knitting book collection. All of Barbara Walker's Treasury books, Lucinda Guy's And So To Bed, because I know people who live in water bottle using countries and they need cozies, not to mention two little guys of my own who are night cap wearers, and then maybe a book that gives me some ethnic patterns/new history of the craft to learn.

Wow, I'm pretty late to the wishing party - having entered the contest the day it was posted. But I was ogling ALL the beautiful Lizard Ridge afghans and blankets on Ravelry and yes, that's what I'd spend some free money on: enough Noro Silk Garden to make my own LR. And then some Jade Sapphire cashmere for a lace sweater. And then some Hand Maiden Silken for scarves for my daughter and sisters. If there was anything left over, some wool and silk sock yarn. Yum. Am I drooling?

Beautiful yarns to knit the ruana in FOLK SHAWLS - that's the next long term (maybe decades long at my pace) project that I have lined up. My friend Marsha and I are going to knit them together in different state (Indiana and Missouri). I don't have yarns in mind, I'd just go and wallow in them all for a while. And I'd like to take more sock knitting lessons to move myself from a theoretical sock knitter to an actual sock knitter...

My LYS is the sweetest little LYS in the world! Three hundred big ones would be a great way to say thank you the the owner for stocking the most up to date colors and lines. Her prices are great and her skills and advice are fantastic! Rowan is her new (limited) line and I would start with enough for a sweater; then move to the Alchemy shelves; try some bamboo and silk blends and work on my 30 pair of socks goals (so I don't have to wash socks for a month!

well, it doesn't matter what i would plan to buy, because my lys is such a luscious place. every time i go in looking for something in particular, i am seduced by something else!

definitely more sock yarn, and something for a cardigan (maybe that central park hoodie, or perhaps a range of colors so that i can dive into fair isle?).

okay, now my papers are never going to get done because i am too busy flipping through back issues of ik! (of course i brought all of them with me to grad school! how else am i going to work out all of my dissertation stress?!?!?!?!)

My "LYS" is 300 miles from my home because that is where I am known by name and can spend hours deciding on just the right yarn. It is 15 mins from my vacation home, mo maybe it is my true LYS.

Well, I've just been knitting for a little under a year now so I'd head straight to Great Yarns to the linens or silks and pick out a pattern for my first real serious sweater/top/dress--something fabulous! The sweaters I've done so far ar quick knits that are ok, but not for real show! I'd also sign up for a lesson or two to make sure I didn't waste that precious yarn -- oh yea - there has to be some purple in there!

Wow - Where would I start... Books - I'd start there. Since I'm a new knitter I'd get one or two technique books. Then I'd get a few Add?'s 7's 8's and 9's in a few lengths. Next is the yarn. Nothing to fancy, some good dependable easy care stuff. My mother-in-law is in a nursing home and I'd make her a thing or two with it - things that won't felt in the wash. A lap afgan, vest, sweater, thing to keep her warm when she needs. Then if there was some left over, (and I'd think there would be ) I'd see if a few of the ladies there knit and crochet and get some supplies for them. I'd get something and be able to pass some along as well. What better way then to get a gift and give a few as well....

Well I have often thought about doing something for charity. I wouldn't mind spending money on some yarn to make either felted bags (my newest passion), baby items (booties, Zimmerman February baby sweater), or the usual scarf. Then I would like to do some sort of auction for these items to raise money for our local Cancer center. Either that, or spend the money to make knitted items for the Cancer center for many of their patients...hats etc. I have many friends that have either lost the battle or are currently fighting the battle that I would like to do something to help them find comfort...even if it is a scarf or cap that might help make things a little easier for them.

In the US you have Hollywood, my LYS is called "Wollywood" and it has this very special cashmere and silk yarn from Lana Grossa, I've been flirting with for a while but, sorry, not my budget yet. But who knows?? As it is Christmas soon, you might have a great heart. And I also would take third place....

Colinette Afghan Kit (either the Ab Fab kit or the Perugino one which is newer), Fair Isle sweater kit for a Simply Shetland or Art of Fair Isle Knitting Design, Berocco afghan or sweater in the one of the newer yarns (Peruvia, Alpaca blend yarn). That's quite a bit more than $300 though.

The Hen House Spring Tx is my local shopping spot for me. What would I do? give 1/2 to my daughter who knits on a budget and we'd both hit our favorites. For me baby alpaca, blue skye alpaca and maybe some fun wild sock yarn and some Cascade, or maybe some new addi needles or a book or two. Definitely a class or two would have to be included. I'm already signed up for her sock of the month and block of the month clubs giving me plenty to do.
Wow, I never win but could I have a ball with that $300 - heck I could even buy me a winder upper gadget!

Then I'd move on to some gorgeous Natura cotton for a cozy sweater for me, then some light worsted or dk weight sock yarn for some great knee high wool socks. Of course we can't forget to try the new glass needles my lys is carrying, or the great selection of books. I'd love some pretty Noro for a baby surprise sweater, and enough of a nice cotton to make all three boys matching sweaters.

Go away! I be bad. These are the steps of my visit the the LYS. If I'm in the mood to buy right away, I go to the sale bin. But sometimes I have to get warmed up by touching and squishing all the new fibers in. Then I will finish up with a quick visit to the "coveted"; things I have lusted over for a while. Then back to the sale bin. Sometimes I will sit in the books, oggling the designs,(sometimes thinking about the knit design book I could write)and then back to the sale bin. One thing is for sure, though, I usually can talk myself out of major purchases, but I can't, can't get out of a yarn shop without a skein of sock yarn. Oh well.

If I win, here is the first thing I will do: pass out. When I come to, I will fortify myself with a good breakfast, head for the shop, and wander around and around the aisles, trying to create an ordered, numbered list of what I want to purchase.

Of course, that won't work. I'll be overwhelmed by all the possibilities.

I have an obscene amount of good yarn, like so many of us knitters, so I will grab batches of superwash wool in a riot of colors, to knit a bunch of crate pads for no-kill animal shelters. Superwash wool is perfect not only for ease of laundering, but also because it's more comfortable than acrylic, and it's the least I can do for the critters.

Then I would probably pass out again.

OH MY! What would I do at my fav yarn shop with $300?! Well, I would buy yarn! Lots and lots of yarn, and I'd buy some much needed knitting accesories. Size 17 double pointed needles I've been needing and some big yarn to go with them! Addi's! Circular's! And YARN! Lots and lots of yarn!

Being on a very limited budget lately, I am having some serious and very painful yarn withdrawals. My stash (what stash?) is getting extremely LOW (like in: non-excintant). The last of my yarn is at this very minute on my needles being knit into Christmas stockings for the grand children. After that...I'm doomed.
I won't go into how my hubby is at the present laid off and how I can't get a job because I'm taking care of my elderly mother, who, bless her heart, taught me to knit and got me addicted to this yarn habit of mine, but let me just say: To win any amount of yarn money would do my heart a world of good these days!

I NEED yarn! If I had that kind of money for yarn, I'd buy some of the softest, dark purple and knit me a beautiful cable sweater for this cold Michigan winter. I'd knit my daughter her big knit dress she saw in the Big City Knit book. I'd knit my cat a bed with some funky, whimsical yarn! I'd knit my husband a pair of black fingerless gloves and my son the skull & crossbone hat he saw and thought was 'cool'.
What would I DO? I could go on and on....!

Oh, just to think of it makes my heart beat and my eyes glaze over!
Thank you for this opportunity to at least have some hope, !!!

Should I be so lucky as to win I would go to the LYS and sign up for some classes, buy some yarn and addi turbo's. I'm fairly new to knitting so all the choices out there can be confusing as to what works best in which project. Taking some classes would help clarify some of that and support the LYS. Technically, there are no local yarn stores here, but we do have a few of those "big-box" places that have yarn, so I'm hoping that's okay. As to what I would buy, I was trying to decide between buying lots and lots and lots of the usual kinds of yarn I use, which are perhaps on the lower-end of the scale or going uptown and indulging in less of the luxurious yarns that I normally only run a hand over as I pass by. Right now, I'm thinking the indulgence variety.....

Oh my goodness, I don't know what I would buy. I'd have to just go and find the yarns that I've always thought would be interesting. Nothing special in mind right now expect some silk for an Annie Modisett corset pullover and some 47 inch Addi turbos: nowhere near $300 though. I'd probably spend hours in there.
Yummy; choose me, choose me, choose me.

Like Ms. June above, I would buy a Hanne Falkenberg kit! I've always dreamed of knitting one of these gorgeous garments, but the nearly $300 price tag is just much too much for my tight budget.

Short of the $300 prize, I think I might invest in starting my Elizabeth Zimmerman library. I've checked out her books from the library, but would love to have copies of my own!

Second, I'd buy yarn. All yarn. Any yarn. Every type of yarn. Any weight, any color, any dye process. All yarn. Yarn. Yarn. Yarn. And then some more yarn. Except maybe that nasty acrylic yarn that looks and feels like spun plastic. But other than that yarn -- I'm buying yarn.

That's it, just two things. A needle case and yarn. Then, I'm knitting.

I would buy cotton yarn and baby yarns as well as knitting needles (just single points) to send to the women in a village in Burkina Faso. The village is named Dablo, and I taught several women there how to knit a couple of years ago. They took to knitting immediately and began to make baby items by looking at existing baby hats and jackets and figuring out what to do. I was amazed. Unfortunately I only had enough yarn and needles for a few women, and I had a list of about fifty women who wanted to learn. I know they could learn from the ones who already knit, and that needles and yarn for everyone would do nicely.

I would knit myself a sweater, perhaps a cardigan. I love the one from Knit Two Together called the Pimlico Shrug. Every time I visit, I flirt with it, that being the last thing I glance at as I leave the store. Tess Designer Yarns in Portland, Maine is my vote. The entire store is filled with luxury yarns hand dyed by the owner. And the prices don't break the bank. The owner (Marissa -- the store is named for her daughter, Tess) has been processing wool for 20 years and FINALLY she has opened a retail store (in a city that rocks! Four outstanding wool stores in town, but Tess' is the best of all, hands down). Am I allowed to give web sites? If so, take a peek on home.gwi.net/~tessyarn/

Oh, yeah! With 300 bucks I could definitely invest in more sock yarn, some heavenly hand-painted lace for some shawls (Victorian Lace, anyone?) and some lovely wool for a mom sweater or two. The question is, do I go for quantity or quality--a little cashmere, or a lot of merino? Also, all my knitting needles have disappeared--is there a black hole out there somewhere for second socks and knitting needles? My favorite lys is undergoing a transformation and, unfortunately, only has a couple of ugly stinker skeins left until the grand reopening-I've been making do since June 11, when I last went (and my car blew up on the way home!) Due to nonfinancial sources, moving around with husband, etc. But, given the chance I would probably venture to either Knitter's Kove, or Needleworks By Holly Berry, in Col. Spgs., CO. First I would have to find someone to tell me how to get there (I am sooo directionally challenged) I know that I would look up some of the charity patterns (Warm Up America, Cubs For Kids, and the one for Scarves and Hoods for Soldiers)for yarn types. Then look for something to make my twin nieces (born this past May)for when they are slightly older (2-4?). It would either be something with a bear in the sweaters or maybe even a bear for each (they have to know I am the Beary nice Aunt). Then I would figure out what is left to spend on myself (ha! ha!) One can only dream (maybe they do come true? hint!,hint.lol)

How dissapointing that your contest is only for american knitters.

Sob, sob! Why isn't this competition open to international readers? I have several USA webstores that I regularly order yarn from?

Hi from Canada. I've always thought that the great thing about the Internet + groups like Knitting Daily, was that it made ALL of us...one big happy family. Apparently not! I ( + apparently many others) think it's very unfair to have a contest like this that gets everyone excited + happy. Then "crash"..we find out we're NOT all equal. I already was feeling left out as the nearest LYS is about a 2hr drive. As my health won't allow that now, I too was wondering about a website order? As Anita M. suggested; why can't it be set up for those outside the US, to order from a US website. I'de love a chance to try some of Knit Picks Harmony wood needles as well as some of their lace wt + sock yarns. Andrea in NS

MMMMM......$300 of yarn. I would have to buy some cashmere. I'm dying to make myself a nice little sweater made of cashmere....but...oh....I've got a few kids to raise, and can't seem to justify spending money on cashmere. I'll be saying my prayers from now until December 31st!

Qivuit! Qivuit! Qivuit!

I would knit a cashmere sweater with Qivuit color and cuffs. Oh, the luxury. No brassiere, no camisole, just soft, soft fibre on my lady-bits.

I'd go for the new Art Yarn's silk and cashmere yarn! With $300 I could make a nice sweater to enjoy and have some money left to buy some Tillie Thomas silk and crystal beaded yarn for a nice scarf. That's an easy one and the gift certificate would be over and done with in a nano second.

Be still my heart! A shopping spree at the sweetest little yarn shop--Twist. Have my shopping list started... And as an avid crocheter who is baffled by two (or more) pointy sticks, I love to read Knitting Daily and see the great projects and ideas. Yarnophiles unite!

Oooh, I would buy yarn to finally knit myself a sweater! How decadent and fun would that be, after knitting all this great stuff and then (sob!) giving it away this month!

I just learned how to knit cables so I can get a bit more fancy in what I love to knit the best - afghans! I've been salivating over the Great American Aran Afghan, and my LYS offers classes for each square so, between classes and yarn, I'd be all set! If there was any money left, though, I'd love to buy enough Mountain Goat for a scarf. The colors are so dreamy, but it's so out of my budget! I'm knitting afghans, blankets and scarves for a couple of my favorite charities, and $300 would go a long way in learning some new skills to be used in future projects. Maybe one of the Harmony books too? Dream a little dream ....

Recently I've reunited with my sister after a long estrangement and have found that she would love to have an alpaca sweater. However, being the wife of a pastor in a small South Dakota town and working as a medical transcriptionist doesn't give them much "luxury" money. So - If I won a $300 shopping spree - I'd buy some fine alpaca yarn to knit her a terrific sweater and thank her for the love she's brought back to our lives.

I have two additional projects I've been really wanting to do (I was too embarrassed to post that I had 33 WIP's in my living room alone!)- I want to make the circular shrug that was re-published in Vogue's anniversary issue-- so the Lorna's Laces are a must. The other project I really want to do is a beautiful sweater design I want to do in Touch Me!!! - Kristen B in CA

I have the most amazing knitting store near me filled with unbelivable colors, textures, etc. It is an experience in itself and I can't imagine having the ability to go in and just let your imagination take you where $300.00 would allow you to go. What a marvelous gift that would be. Thanks for the dream!

I can't breathe!! It would be almost too unbelievable and I'd cry. What I would do with it-swim in all the alpaca yarn they had, oh and the cashmere and soy/silk. I would make my family of aunts and cousins and sister and Step-Mom,,(made one for my Mom already),a warm and pretty shawl to wrap themselves in as if to hug them & let them know much I love them. Good Luck Everyone!!

If I had 300 bucks to spend at the LYS, I would buy as much yarn as I could to continue to make lap robes for my cacer patients, they love them and I love making them!!

Hi! I wanted to let you know how much i enjoy your newsletter and your site. As I have been fighting a rare type of breast cancer and suffering with fibromyalgia, my computer, needles, yarn and your site have become a blessing to me. i have two daughters ( 9 and 12) whom i have been teaching the basics of knitting and crocheting. I have found so much to do and keep busy with here. I have made quite a layette for my first born grandchild, filled all of my friends houses with afghans and various house presents. My only problem is, I live on a small disability and I cant seem to keep enough yarn nor patterns. Please keep up the great articles! Always an avid fan of yours... trish ecker

Yarn Fantasies...okay, here's a thought, (the ol' "if I won the lottery" fantasy intertwined)...I would open a fuller-than-full service Vegan Cafe, have enough time & money to train folks to run it in all ways needed & proper...in the corner near the front window would be MY chair, MY KNITTING CHAIR, & eventually, I would have a fully-loaded knitted wardrobe - I'd take breaks to eat & such, of course...

Malabrigo. And this Colinette mohair I always have to pet when I walk in there, but never buy because it seems frivolous. And Lantern Moon Destiny Circulars in every size, 16", to compliment my set of KnitPicks Harmonies. Anything leftover, I would donate to the Project Linus my LYS is involved with, because I really like that charity.
