Will You Be One of Three Lucky Knitters?
Nov 30, 2007

This could be YOU in YOUR LYS!

We interrupt this broadcast of the Knitting Daily/Interweave Knits Winter 2007 Gallery Series to ask you this all-important question:

What would you buy if someone gave you $300 to spend at your local yarn shop?

This is not a theoretical question, my yarn-loving friends. This is For Real. Interweave Press is giving away gift certificates for a shopping spree at the yarn shop of your choice. Three of you lucky folks will win one of the following in a random drawing: first prize wins a $300 spree, second prize wins a $200 spree, and third prize wins a $100 spree.

(Go enter the contest. Then come on back to share a few good Yarn Fantasies with the rest of us.)

All right, now that you know it's a REAL question, let me repeat it so you can start thinking about what you would do with your winnings:

What would you buy if we gave you a $300 shopping spree at your favorite local yarn shop? How about a nice $200 spree? Or a $100 spree?

Be still my heart.

What would you choose?

Well, no. Not be still MY heart, because I, as Knitting Daily Ringleader, cannot, of course, enter the drawing, not even under a false name. (Think about this. Every local yarn shop owner from here to Estonia has my photo. There's no way I could sneak in with one of the Yarn Spree gift certificates and try to pass myself off as Someone Not Sandi. Especially not when I headed straight for the anything-silk-and-purple section. Right there, I'd be caught red-handed. Or rather, purple-handed...)

But for the rest of you: Be still your hearts. Imagine it. A gift certificate for $300 is in your hand, and the entire yarn shop is your oyster.

A girl can dream, though. Even though I can't enter the drawing, I can live vicariously through all of you. Tell me what your shopping spree would be like, and why your local yarn shop is the best one there is.

Next week: The Ivy League Vest Gallery, and more!

What's on Sandi's needles? Six inches of the Gathered Pullover; a pair of socks on two circulars with partial heel flaps, and six inches of the hood of my husband's cabled hoodie.

I would buy Blue Sky Alpacas Suri Merino in pale pink and cranberry. I've had my eye on it for several months now and I pet it each time I visit my LYS then give it a gentle goodbye pat as I walk out the door. It's like a cloud and I can just imagine how wonderfully delicious a sweater would be out of it. Sadly it is a little beyond my price range to buy that much of it. And I would finish my Addi Turbos collection because they are my absolute favorite needles. And if there was anything left, I would buy those wonderful new Harmony Stitch Guides you keep teasing us with! As for my LYS, I frequent Article Pract in Oakland, CA. It is an amazing store in a cute little section of Oakland. All of the ladies that work there are tremendously helpful and remember my name and the projects I have worked on! Kudos to them I say. :) I always feel welcome and free to browse for hours and ask the opinions of the store denizens. And I love geeking about knitting, isn't that what LYS's are for?

Malabrigo.

Or anything cashmere.

Or Kidsilk Haze, enough to make a luscious light gorgeous twinset.

Or more Tilli Tomas silk.

Or or or...!

But I can't win - no one in Canada can. :-(

My spree would have to be on-line. Knitting is not very popular in South Africa (i'm working on changing that though, Ive enabled one new knitter) and there are a variety of yarns that I've read about that I'm itching to try: STR, Lorna's Laces, Trekking, Noro, all not available here, and with the rand => dollar exchange rate out of reach.

Pick me, pick me!! Please pick me! I'm not usually reduced to begging, but dollars in an on-line yarn store...oh my...

If I won I would probably think I had died and gone to heaven!!! I would purchase some really neat yarn (non-wool, probably Berroco Comfort) to make my sister a Rambling Rows sweater/jacket. There is a new great niece/nephew coming in July, and probably a special yarn for myself. I would not have a problem spending that much money on yarn!!!

I am so overwhelmed by this possibility that I don't know what to say. I would really like to try new yarns, so I would have to finger everything in the store, find the most exciting and unusual yarns and then get enough of them to make the perfect (fill in the blank) here. But oh the agony! it would be so hard to find the perfect pattern for that perfect yarn!!

Oh, wow! What would I buy? I think I would have to go for something I don't usually do - like Buffalo Gold or some of the lovely Cashmere yarns that are out there... and after that, some pattern books that I have been looking at (the Harmony Guides and Barbara Walker Treasuries come to mind). Or, maybe I'd put it toward the little Louet Victoria spinning wheel that has been begging to come home with me (though I have 4 wheels already :-). I think there would have to be a few Addi Lace needles in my selection, as well as some of the incredible hand-dyed yarns that she carries... Oh, the possibilities!!! What a fun dream to dream!

Hmm. I would have fun in the sock yarn. And with sweater-type yarn. And in the fiber! And probably a book or three. Sadly, I haven't been to my favorite LYS in.. six months? because my budget is so extremely limited, so I can't specify what yarn I would buy.

I'm actually not very fond of my geographicaly closest LYS; it doesn't have a lot the things I look for, and I don't find its atmosphere very welcoming. Happily, only a little further off is The Rose and Ram in Independence, OR, which is a beautiful little shop, very warm and welcoming, and full of things I want to take home with me. I wish the budget allowed me to go there more often!

I'd buy luxurious wooden (maybe ebony?) needles, to help begin to replace my large and ancient collection of inherited Boye Aluminum ones. Then I'd buy some delicious soft luxury sweater yarn in an eggplant color. I have a ton of patterns already, so I ought not to be tempted there - but I just might have to review the pattern books to make sure I haven't missed anything. "Aberlady" is on my list, but not suited for soft luxury yarn, so I might need to purchase a pattern book after all! What a wonderful fantasy -

Tilli Tomas silk. Lots and lots of silk. Ooh and Blue Sky Alpaca cotton, two of my best friends are pregnant and I need good cotton for baby clothes. Plus lots of yummy Noro and ArtYarns, I just love their colorways. So gorgeous. Since I rarely if ever get to shop for good yarn, I usually only buy one skein of any particular yarn, so I would spend the $300 getting enough of ONE yarn to actually make something! What a great contest.

Ruth C. says she doesn't know many knitters in South Africa - I am so sorry to hear that since I did some serious knitting when I lived there (1989-93). I don't specifically recall any knitting shops but I bought wonderful handspun wool and cotton at craft sales and flea markets - mostly in Kwa-Zulu-Natal. I've since heard that polar fleece is big there which might explain this. Best of luck converting the next generation of knitters, Ruth.

Cheers,

Does anyone else find that it is more difficult to spend a gift certificate than it is to use real money or *gasp* a credit card? Cash and cards lend a certain spontaneity to any shopping trip, but a certificate always makes me act responsibly. I want to get the best deals I can find and always end up near the sale rack to make the certificate go farther. I guess 100-300 dollars is enough that I'd just try to throw caution to the wind and buy something I would ordinarily not splurge on!

Fiber Nooks & Crannies in Corvallis, OR, isn't just my favorite LYS, it's the *only* non-craft-store LYS in my immediate area. Michelle manages to pack more yarn into the tiny shop than seems possible, pays attention to fiber trends and what her customers prefer, hosts knit-and-crochet nights and classes, stocks a good selection of books and single patterns - and always seems happy to stop what she's doing and talk yarn.

I would buy enough yarn for 2-3 sweaters in nice wool, like Dale of Norway Baby Ull. It's hard for me to justify buying "a sweater's worth" all at once, because that's a lot of money, so I'd take this opportunity to actually buy enough skeins of yarn in the same color and same dyelot. :)

Alpaca-silk
Kid silk haze
Maybe both?
oh, and some Lantern Moon needles!
Maybe a class or two?
Enough Noro Silk Garden for the Lady E?
I think I'd decide on one thing for me and buy some nice wool blend yarn for a sweater for my husband as well. He has had lap band surgery and is loosing weight and we all know hard hard that is. he deserves for me to make him a really nice sweater! (After I make one for me! LOL)

Then...the options at Lakeside Fibers in Madison WI would be endless. Wool for felting, Dale of Norway Stork for sweaters for my daughter, something for my husband, sock yarn for me, too. First, I would faint. Then, upon regaining consciousness, I would do a "happy dance" which consists of me jumping up and down while waving my arms frantically. Finally, after calming down, I would head to my LYS and purchase yarn that would usually be out of my budget (silk and/or cashmere anyone?) and special order some Addis. Then, if I had any money leftover, I would buy a skein or two for my mom who taught me how to knit and crochet and who is so happy to see me pick it up again.

Most of our local yarn stores have closed, and the new one has an unfriendly attitude towards customers and very high prices, so my best LYS would be one hour away: WEBS. They also have gotten a bit arrogant and don't go out of their way to be helpful, especially for online customers, but they have a huge selection, and I would use my winnings to buy a selection of special yarns for my charitable knitting project which will raise money for counseling for those who cannot afford it. WEBS has good discounts on new yarns as well as great prices on first-quality closeout yarns, so the money would go farther there than anywhere else nearby.

Usually make gifts for other people (and I'm sure that would still happen), but I have just had emergency surgery and it would be great fun to treat myself to something really great! My favorite LYS is Lambspun in Ft. Collins - made famous through Maggie Sefton's knitting murder mysteries. Its a wonderful place to experience everything to do with yarn and fiber - just like its portrayed in the books. With a shopping spree I'd buy dreamy alpaca fiber for my spinning wheel, Mountain Colors Bearfoot yarns - I just love the colors, and many of the new Interweave books I have been coveting... Bag Style, Folk Style, the new Harmony Guides, Knit Kimono , The Best of Interweave Knits... oh, I a starting to drool on the keyboard!

I would probably begin with lovely wools (Noro, Manos, etc), then move to alpaca and cashmere. I'd knit myself a really nice sweater or cardigan and felt a lot of cool purses! Ooh, ooh, and there was a $40 (!!) hank of ultra-fancy yarn I'd love to get my hands on!

I never have enough money to buy yarn for projects that take a lot of expensive yarn in a lot of different colors. My first choice would be to make the scarf out of umpteen colors of Rowan Kidsilk Haze in a Log Cabin-style patchwork, published through this newsletter several weeks ago. Heavenly to touch and sift through all those colors -- the apotheosis of the knitting experience! Maybe something in Fair Isle, too, for the same reason. Also, my sweater size is 52", so I almost never knit anything for myself, except bags and scarves. It just takes too much yarn, even at KnitPicks prices. I'd probably try a swingy, assymetrical Norah Gaughan jacket with some kind of interesting textural pattern -- a real yarn-eater at any size. Thank you for giving us the opportunity to dream; it helps clarify what we want, what we really, really want...

I would try to be practical, no really I wouldn't let all of the yarns whispering my name turn my head completely from my goal.

So I would divide it up three ways:
$100 towards classes at The Knitting Bee - a sock and a sweater class for sure!

$100 towards needles and notions. Filling those 'gaps' in double pointed (including ones for socks!), and splurging on a pair of Lantern Moon needles. I'm sure a bottle of Eucalan would also jump into my basket. Books, so many good ones, but I'd really like my own copy of 101 Designer One Skein Wonders. Or a ball winder! This area might be tough to keep from spending elsewhere in my allotment.

The last but not least area I'd spend $100 in would be yarn for all the projects I'd like to try. Fun yarn - silk, alpaca, sock yarn, Manos del Uruguay, something from Tanglewood Fibers, or some Lorna's Laces. I'm with Sandi, it will be hard to stay away from purple!

Hmm...I think I just gave myself a good start to a wish list to go build.... ;^)

Oh and I can't forget some top-of-the-line wool to make my DH the gloves he so desperately needs. And probably some STR. Ooh and Noro. NOROOOOOOOO!!!

As a good contestant,I could say I'd use all yarn to knit /crochet blankets for world peace.:) But I would like to use some of the winnings for needles, hooks ,books and yarn for a rehabilition facility / women's or mens shelter and I'd teach the folks who want to how to knit and crochet. Also kids. I would really like to do that. As for myself I'd LOVE to make a TOUCH ME or Angora and Merino BLANKET!! At Knitting Arts, the owner had some non-itchy mohair which I found amazing so I'd make a frewffy scarf with that. And with any leftover$(if there is)some Bulky Misti Alpaca for a cable sweater and if possible scarves or hats for their charitable acts program. AND I'd love to knit/crochet with the other people making items.

But I really DID want to tell you what I'd buy at my LYS... I want to buy yarn to make the Sunrise Circle Jacket (in purple!). I love my LYS-es, there are (were) several that I frequent. The one that I specifically want to support is new (it's only been there about a year). The other two nice yarn shops in our area have closed, so I really want to make sure that this one stays put! The next closest LYS to my house isn't too "L" (34 mi.).
It's often cheaper to buy online, but if we don't spend locally and support businesses in our own communities, they won't remain in business.
I'm really excited to make that jacket. I've decided on the color, but not the exact yarn yet. Since I have two projects to finish, I have some time to ponder and save up :-)

If there were funds left over, next some lovely alpaca to try my hand at the Icelandic shawl. Lace, a totally new experience. Then, some...well, maybe I should stop dreaming and finish the on-needle projects so I could in good conscience go pick up the winning yarns!!

Thanks again for the dream-time.

One thing for sure, I would buy several skeins of Baby alpaca in a very pale green. Also, I love the Skacel addi turbo knitting needles and would complete my whole set. Mmmm... any of those amounts would be quite the splurge for me.

I am always drawn to the finer weight yarns and would probably earmark some of the money for something in the lace-weight to fingering weight groups and possibly some needles to go with it, to expand on/fill the missing gaps in my collection?

Though there are a couple of household members due for a sweater so I would need to consider that....

What would be nice is to invest some of the money in some really nice bulky weight yarn for a healing shawl/scarf/blanket to donate as the need arises.

Colors? Purples, blues, bluey-purples, green, mostly colors that are jewel-toned vs pastel and, of course natural colors also.

I tend towards natural fibers, wool mostly, with a smattering of other fiber types as needed.

What do I love about my local yarn shop?

1. The people. I have known the various owners since it opened and have always felt welcomed by then, even when my kids were younger and even though I have a very limited yarn budget.

2. Great selection of yarns, willingness to investigate yarns I am looking for.

3. Natural light, two big couches and a large oval table.

4. Nice folks overall, willingness to share knowledge, comfortable atmosphere and located in a building with:
a branch of the library; coffee and bagel shop; pizza parlor; video store; florist; hair stylist; liquor store - something for everyone :->

I would buy yarn from the Fibre Company (any yarn from the Fibre Company... they are all sinfully delicious!) to make my husband Jared Flood's Cobblestone. With the left over money I would buy some more Addi Turbos, cause a knitter can never have enough needles.

Wow, I would spend the day in my favorite shop, touching everything, finding JUST the right yarns for different projects for different people, like the little old man who I talk to frequently outside the local coffeeshop who obviously has little money, and I decided I need to find some yarn somewhere so I can knit him up a hat and scarf and mittens. Did I mention I am a left handed knitter?? I am new to the knitting realm and after taking over 20 years of struggle to learn, by golly I am just firing away at it! If I won $200: yarn from Dream in Color, anything from Schaefer, Stacy Charles "Ritratto" for a sweater that melds the Hourglass Sweater, JM-M's tank (for the shaping), and Ez's saddle shoulder, top-down sweater from Knitter's Almanac. And a pair of Colony needles (maybe even 2).

If I won $300 - Perhaps an Einstein sweater out of "Touch Me" or my $200 choices plus one of those yarns from Celest P's Pinwheel (can be long...can ne short depending on my mood). And some Barefoot.

If I could apply in to online vendors--totally BMFA, I could sock in a bunch of the colorways on my Wish List.

Then I would probably pick one of my favorite patterns from Interweave Knits, or my stack of knitting books, and salivate over the prospect of adding some rich wool/silk combination to make a great aran sweater. Or maybe I would make a quick project like a hat or a pair of socks. But most likely I would pick an intricate project so as to challenge my skills with a delicious dessert of colors and texture to design my project. It would be so much fun not being limited to price, but being free to have the experience of picking the best of the lots, the design I love,go home and during the cold of winter, create a masterpiece.

My fav LYS is new: Apple Yarns in Bellingham, WA. They fill a niche not only for me but our entire fiber community. If I were to win one of these sprees, I'd spend some of it on a class. Why? Money budgeted for yarn is hard to spend on anything else. While I could continue trying and trying and frogging and trying again, an actual class - and the new friends that would come with it - are priceless. Well, almost! LOL!

Wow! My budget is so tight that even the third place win would put me in heaven. Good thing I know how to make the most of budget yarns like Red Heart, Moda Dea and Lion!

Some one way up above me mentioned finding an ultimate sweater pattern. Lion has one called exactly that, made with a cashmere blend that I have been wanting to try for so long. And then there's the Brushed Lace cardi in this month's IK. One of my granddaughters is learning to knit, so I could get her the basics. Oh! and books! I see so many great books on this site that I would love to own.

Sadly, my favorite budget-friendly LYS (Beverly's Crafts in San Jose) is closing up after the holidays. There is a second store all the way across town from me, but it's not the same. Very few of the staff will be transferred to the second store.

Now, if Someone decided I should win the first prize of $300, there is a brand new high-end store in walking distance of Santa Clara U. Oh! the stuff you can find in the Bobbin's Nest! I like to go in at lunch and just admire the colors and textures. Someday, someday, someday.

Please, dear Santa, I've been a very good girl this year.

She doesn't fuss if they stroke yarn. "Start them early" she says. I would buy yarn in sweater quantities. Usually my budget supports sock quantities, or gloves or something else small. Oh to go to Lora's Knit 'N Needle Nook and have that much to spend. First I would throw a bunch of yarn on the floor and roll around in it to decide which is the softest. This could take a while. Then I would pull out every pattern book she carries and look thru them. This could take some time.
Then I would go back to the yarns and choose what color. This could take some time.
By this time Lora would be closing the store. I would have been there for about 16 hours. So I would go home and then come back the next day and start all over again.

I think this would be a lovely dream.

Dear Sandi, my church sponsors a chapter of "My Brother's Keepers" which makes quilts for the homeless. We also include hand-knitted hats, scarves, and gloves or mittens with each sleeping bag. We never have enough good quality wool yarn, so i wold use my shopping spree to purchase skeins of heavy wool yarn to make mittens.

On my shopping spree, I would begin by buying a yarn swift & a ball winder, lots of wool yarn, some rovings.....

I would get lots of exotic fibers, such as camel and quiviut. I have only been able to stroke the latter, and not actually buy, so it would be nice to actually own some!

Hands down(no pun intended) my favorite LYS is Unwind in Burbank, CA. Stephanie (the ever helpful and cheerful) owner never forgets anyone's name and is always ready to help no matter what the problem. If I won one of the prizes I would probably spend the entire day at Unwind going through the extensive library to pick a special pattern and then I would choose yarn that I normally would call a decadent purchase. Oh, what fun -- my heart is racing at the thought!

Woe is me 'cos i live in Canada. But having just received Veronik Avery's book and the Scottish Highlands Knits, I would love to buy some yarn to knit my husband the great zippered vest (VA)- and the gorgeous heathery gloves and scarf for me (SHK)

What would I buy? I'm not sure if i'd head for anything purple and silky, but something silky for sure. Maybe an apple green, or the perfect red? I'd love to try some Bamboo, or pretty much anything from Takhi...Then of course, there's the Bag, and the needles. I'm in ecstacy just thinking about it.

Oh my! A shopping spree at my LYS, that is like sending a kid to the candy store! Ok, first of all, I am relatively new to knitting, and it is a great experience! My favorite LYS is Chix With Stix in Forest Park, IL. I mean I thought I was weird by the way I would get excited over yarn or patterns, but the moment I stepped into this store it was like....Haaaaaaaa, total heaven! Everyone is soo friendly and helpful, especially Kelly! She understood me from the first moment! Ok, let me stop rambling, I have recently finished a scarf for my daughter with Alpaca, she LOVED it and has requested an afghan knitted with cranberry alpaca, I told her she was coo-coo, because if a the yarn for the scarf was almost $40.00, how much would it be for a whole afghan?! So that is I would do if I won, buy the yarn and a pair of Addi Turbos to knitt my daughter her Cranberry Alpaca Afghan!

Knit On! carries an incredible variety of yarn. They have almost a whole room of sock yarn, including all my favorites. They also carry a variety of weights of baby alpaca, also one of my favorites, at reasonable prices. I could go on and on. I could spend $300 easily, especially during their bag yarn sale!

OMG....$300?? I am taking a mental trip around the shop and I am just a mess trying to figure out "what first?!?" Alpaca?? Should I buy that chunky alpaca? Just trying to figure out how I would spend the money is making my head spin!

I'd buy sock yarn (mmmm Lorna's Laces), probably some lace yarn, and (if I had money left) maybe something for a sweater. I'm sure I'd have a hard but fun time choosing.

But which LYS to pick as my favorite? I go to Stash in Berkeley, CA more frequently, but I do love the selection of sock yarn at Article Pract in Oakland!

$300 smackers in a yarn shop? humph.......what would I buy? Well I would head straight down to Yarn Lady, and once again drool all over their carpet. I would purchase some really really expensive yarn that would be light, and flow, and be the ultimate luxurious garmet I would ever make from clicking at my needles. Picking out the yarn would take a couple of hours, cuz there would be a lot of touchy feely going on. And the time spent cruising the isles with a warm glow in my tummy would be better than any trip to a candy shop. Yarn feeds my sole. I would like to gain some yarn lbs!!!

Well. Tis, the season to give. A woman in my knitting group was just diagnosed with breast cancer and I would buy enough yarn for everyone in the group to be able to contribute to a knit/crochet blanket for her. Then, since we are putting together a crochet basket for her, I'd buy tools, patterns, and yarn for it. If there was any money left, I'd buy a skein of Lorna's Laces Shepherd Worsted for a pair of socks for me. I think that I'm allowed to say something selfish :) Rose T: I looove Stix. Have made the trip from Billings to Bozeman just for that reason, as have others in my knit group.
