Magnanimity Cardi by Veera Välimäki |

A note from Kathleen: I love this issue of Knitscene (which will be available on January 25). It's a winter/spring issue so there are great winter designs and inspiring spring designs all in one magazine. It's just January and still chilly here in Spokane, but if you're dreaming of spring (or if you live in a warm climate), this particular issue of Knitscene is for you!
One of my favorite pieces is Veera Välimäki's Magnanimity Cardi. I love those deep pockets!
I've invited Knitscene editor Lisa Shroyer here to tell you more about the new Knitscene, and to share some exciting news! Here she is.
It's 2011 and we have a surprise for you!

It's 2011 and we have a surprise for you.
Starting this year, Knitscene will be
released quarterly. That means a new issue every three months! We've been
dreaming up more fashion themes, more tutorials, more photoshoot ideas than
ever. I've been scouring the net and magazines for inspiration-in my idea
folder right now: Flamenco dancers, art nouveau paintings, hippie girls and
hipster lumberjacks, Nordic landscapes, southwestern motifs...it's going to be a
good year for Knitscene. And a fun one for me as editor!
To start the year off, the Winter/Spring issue features some really cool new
designers, an array of unusual constructions, and pretty little knits that make
a fashion statement.
We searched the globe for the coolest in simple knitting and made a stop in the
Baltic-check out the Magnanimity Cardi from Finnish designer Veera Välimäki and
the Scandinavian styling of the colorwork projects in "Don't Steek
Me." We looked for the finest in plant-blend yarns and found unusual
combos: cotton and alpaca, flax and wool, and more. Lustrous silks, seed beads,
bits of lace and light-they put sparkle in your winter and also transition into
spring with ease.
We looked to knitwear trends for Spring and saw lots of one-piece dolman
styles, just like Melissa Wehrle'e Chiton Pullover (named after the draped and
pinned dress of Ancient Greeks). We found menswear references, just like the
styling of Debbie O'Neill's designer collection. Folk and Boho elements remain
strong-perennial influences on the Knitscene
look and feel.
Beyond the projects, you'll find tutorials on custom raglan sleeves, using art
yarns, styling your handknits, and how to avoid steeks in colorwork, and some
lively illustrations by yours truly! I love being able to get out my oil
pastels and call it work.
More than anything, in these pages, I hope you find something stirringly new-some
inspiration for another year of knitting and dreaming.
Thank you and enjoy the preview.
