New Knit-Along: The Seaweed Cardigan

Jan 7, 2011

Since almost 1500 of you voted for this cardigan, it's the overwhelming winner—and I'm happy about it, too!

If you don't have the pattern, it's available here or in your Spring 2010 issue of Interweave Knits. The pattern doesn't have any errata, so we're all set there.

Almost everyone who's knit this says it's a fast knit, so I'll do a semi-short schedule.

1/7-1/28: Gather materials, get gauge, knit the back
1/29-2/18: Knit the fronts
2/19-3/4: Complete finishing and post photos in this forum
3/4-Forever: Wear with pride!

How does that sound?

I'm going to be using Classic Elite Soft Linen in a dark blue. How about you?

To join the knit-along, simply jump over to the forum and join the conversation about your knitting progress!

Welcome, everyone—I can't wait to see your progress and hear all of your tips and tricks.

XO,

I've never done a KAL before, but want to give it a try! I admired this pattern last spring in the magazine; now I have a fun reason to knit it. I love the idea of a shawl pin instead of a belt. Wil look tomorrow for a cotton blend (linen? soy?) at LYS; otherwise I see an interesting one on line...

Hi everyone,

I have lost over 50 lbs since the last time I did the KAL.  I am excited to be knitting a new cardi!

More later.

Okay, I'll give it a shot.  I will look in my stash for a nice medium yarn.  I have never knitted lace, so this will be a learning experience.

I like this one--I have never done a KAL and probably could never keep to the schedule, but this is exactly what I have been looking for.  I think this one is a definite to-do, one way or the other....

Hi everyone, This is my first kal. I bought a multicolored yarn in blues, greens and golds. Don't remember the name but same weight and type yarn. I think it may really look like seaweed! It is not showing the pattern as well as I would like but I am going on because I love the yarn! Happy knitting everyone! Michael

This is my 1st KAL!  I'm still swatching, I tried Caron Spa (bamboo/acrylic) in berry frappe, but it did not show the stitch definition as well as I had hoped. Swatching again with 2 others & then I'll choose. I can't wait to get started on the back : )

When using the cable cast-on, do I insert the right needle between the same 2 stitches for all 8 cast ons?

I am making this with Sublime Soya Cotton DK (color #084, Comfrey (light blue)) which is a soy/cotton blend that is super soft and drapey - wonderful to work with and is knitting quickly.  I am making a size to fit my hips which is my widest part.  I will make it to overlap a bit  in the front and use a shawl pin to secure it. No belt.

I think the next one I make will be with a stiffer yarn like Brown Sheep Cotton Fleece.

Just FYI:  I am have been knitting for over 40 years, but this is a great pattern for everyone including new knitters.

Not my first KAL, but I hope this will be the first one I  finish on time!
