A  am working  helping to form a group to show different  craft like knitting, crochet and other kind of craft to our young people boys and girls and everybody in the community. Our center will be in the school , so I expect that student will be curious and visit  us. So if I win something, it will serve to many people . Something like that  : ) will appear to my face .

For six years, I have been volunteering at my local 4th through 6th grade school at lunch time.  I began with crocheting and added looming three years ago.  Last year I added knitting when one 5th grade girl asked if she could sit with us and work on her knitting which led to my teaching seven other 5th graders this skill.  Over the years, mostly girls come, but a few boys have joined us.  I provide all the yarn, hooks, looms, and needles.  As a reward for finishing a scarf, I crochet each student a hat.  Some years, I have only eight students while occasionally I have as many as 25 learning a craft.

In the past two weeks, I have taught knitting to two Girl Scout troops at the school.  One troop has 8 girls and the other has 12 girls.  The girls are anxious to learn, and so are the leaders.

I taught a friend a work to knit and she jumped in with both feet and has not stopped running yet. She has watched me knit different but liked the socks I knit which got her interested in the first place.  Her first sock would have fit an elephant ( her words).  But she did not let that stop her.   She has knit several things and is now working on her second blanket of squares.  I am so happy for her and she knits very well.

Sharing is not only helping, but it's fun and you get to know people better.

I knit and crochet and just finished a six week volunteer project teaching elementary kids through Hope Worldwide how to crochet. What a blast the last two sessions seeing them working on  their cotton washcloths.

Next month I will be volunteering at a school for at risk girls and teaching them to crochet. I will have two groups ones that already have some skills and ones that are wanting to learn. I look forward to taking the skilled ones to the next level.

I host a knitting group at my home once a month and we have ages 13 thru 60ish coming to knit. My dear friend is just getting back into knitting and I am helping her with her first sweater for her granddaughter. She is making wonderful progress and has the back and one front piece done. I knit and crochet and just finished a six week volunteer commitment for Hope Worldwide Saturday school and taught 8 elementary kids how to crochet. What a blast the last two weeks watching them make a cotton washcloth.

Next month I start volunteering at a youth center for girls teaching them how to crochet. This will be every other Saturday. I will have some brand new learners along side some that have the basics. This should be fun to take the girls that already have some experience to the next level.

I also have a group that meets at my house once a month for knitting and currently am helping one gal from the group start her very first sweater project for her granddaughter. I told her if you can knit and purl you can make a sweater. So far the back and one side are already done. She is doing a fabulous job.

I would really love to help her practice her knitting and pass on my deep love for knitting (and yarn!!!). She is an eager student and a super-smart cookie so I know it would be a pleasure to teach her. Her daughter is also at a prime age for knitting, also. She is a 2nd grader!

It has been amazing and very rewarding especially when you can witness the transformation of a knitter who overcomes an obstacle (e.g. learning a new technique) or learns something new that then opens up whole new possibilities and their imagination and creativity starts to take off...! These sweepstakes actually come at a perfect time; the teenage daughter of my neighbor has seen all the stuff I knit and continuously comments on how cute they are (usually handbags, which I told her was one of the most easy and fun things to knit). She got so interested that I actually cleared out my massive stash and gave her a starter set of needles and yarn, along with a few quick lessons of some basic techniques. She's made her first scarf and is now making a cute little handbag, I'm so proud of her and I would be so grateful to be able to give her more to work with, thanks for the opportunity.

I am an experienced knitter but have to admit I like the "instant" gratification of smaller items. I have tried to tempt several of my friends to learn knitting, but to no avail. However, the last time I was visiting my son and his family, my DIL asked me if I would teach her next time I visited. I happily said yes, but alas, she has taught herself in the meantime. But - I know she'll be picking my brain on my visit in May.

I sort of stumbled into passing on my love of knitting. Here's my story....

While sitting at the MANY Little League baseball games my son played in over the years, I always brought some knitting project with me to pass the time. I got a lot of projects done during the early phases of his baseball career!  In the course of those games you play a lot of the same teams more than once.  I started having the little sisters of some of the players on my son's team watch me me.  They were all too shy to ask anything about it, but I started to show them what I was making, (usually the picture on the pattern I was using) and they would stare at the needles working the yarn.  As the season wore on, I had first one and then two and then four children ask me to teach them.  Finally, I had my own 'knitting circle' of 10 player siblings.  I made little practice books for them to take home and talked to their parents about some of the types of yarn, needles and patterns for them to practice.  It was always so much fun to see these young girls come running up to me with their projects in varying states of completion.  And a few with tears and knotted yarn to be untangled, feelings soothed, and projects started over.  I ultimately earn the name 'The Knitting Lady' and had classes during ballgames with these children sitting on a blanket on the ground all around me.  Those small classes were some of the best times that I've ever had.  They actually followed me to when my son progressed from Little League to high school baseball. Once again the pattern repeated itself with more younger siblings of the boys my son played with.  My little knitting circle would just move from baseball field to baseball field.  Here in Florida you play baseball pretty much year round so my students had lots of time to practice.  Finally those classes came to an end at high school graduation and onto college for my son.  I don't have any more baseball games to go to and no more bored little sisters, so eager to so something their big brothers couldn't do, to teach.  I miss those days so much.  I just received a letter in the mail last week from one of my former 'students'.  It was from her mother thanking me for introducing her daughter to the joys knitting.  It seems that her daughter enjoyed what I'd taught her so much that she kept with it and is now quite proficient.  She's actually started teaching some of her school friends to knit too.  Wow....what a neat letter and it was topped off with a picture of her daughter diligently working on a project with the family cat sitting on the back of the chair watching the yarn.  I couldn't have passed my passion on in a better way if I had tried!

I love to pass on my passion of knitting. Right now I'm teaching  7/8 graders and 4/5 graders in our Boys & girls Club after school programs on Mondays and Thursdays. They are knitting small squares to be jooined into small "kitty blankets" for our local Humane Society. On Wednesdays, I take yarn and needles and join friends at Mary's Place in downtown Seattle, a day shelter for homeless women. We teach and chat, and send them off with their own needles and yarn in a bag. Just a little bit of something "normal" for them.

In the last 48 hours alone I showed 3 people (who asked) how to knit continental style: in line for the bus, on the bus, and waiting for an appointment with my doctor. Though I've been knitting for years, only last year someone on a bus taught me how to do the continental! What a great community we're part of!

I learned to knit from my grandmother over 40 yrs. ago but never kept it up.  2 years ago a co-worker was teaching a knit course and I signed up so she would have at least 1 body.  The class didn't go but we began to knit together once a week and now have a small group that has joined us.   She has conned me into taking the Master Knitter courses.

I am the current President of our local quilt guild. Besides being an avid quilter, I'm also involved in crochet since early age. Began knitting few years ago and just love it !  I passed around a signup sheet to the quilt members who attended and 13 of them wanted to "join" our new Knitting/Crochet group. If I won I think the prizes would be of great value to our new group. Also, would like to say I really appreciate your giving everyone the opportunity to win such a great prize.

I taught myself to knit when I was 19 years old.  I'm left handed and knit totally left handed.  I've taught my daughters to crochet and one to knit, taught my Granddaughters to knit and one to crochet.  Grandson took arts in high school and the teacher had them knit a scarf!  LOL.  Love it.  Wish all kids could learn one of the fiber arts, knit, crochet, tatting, etc.  Wonderful hobbies that you can use to help others.

on Mar 11, 2012 4:24 PM

I learned to knit when I was about 10 years old.  I taught my three grand daughters how to knit when they were about 7.  I've been teaching knitting at our local high school for the past 2 years.  I've also been teaching at our local park district for the past 5 years and in my home for the past 7 years.  Love every minute and made a lot of friends along the way.  It's such a surge of good feeling when I see one of my students complete a project.  At the high school, one of my students finished a hat and she was so proud of herself.  What a joy to be able to teach someone.

I am always eager to teach a craft to anyone who wants to learn. My grandmother taught me crochet and smocking. A friend taught me to knit, for the most part, over the phone. Other crafts, I learnt from books. After many unsuccessful attempts to learn tatting from books, I took a class to learn where I was shown how to flip the knot (the one thing I couln't figure out from books). The woman teaching the class instructed everyone in her class to teach tatting to two others ( so that the craft doesn't become a lost art).

It's kind of funny that this sweepstakes showed up this month.  I'm deployed right now but I taught my 13 year old niece how to knit when I was on R&R earlier this month.  We've been trading knit stories via email and having lessons by Skype since I got back, and she's even started teaching her mom. After every new technique I explain to her, she turns around and shows her mom.  My grandmother originally taught me to knit 20 years ago, and it's nice to be able to pass that on to my munchkin.

I have recently started a knitting club at the inner city school I teach at.  25 students have started and there are at least ten more on the waiting list who will start this month.  The boys and girls are really excited about knitting!  More and more students watch them knitting and want  to join the club.  So far I have kept up with the need for supplies with donations of yarn and needles and only bought a small portion myself. Knitters are so generous with their stashes when it means sharing the love of knitting.  I think it is the first time most of these kids have made anything on their own and it is great to see them gaining much needed self-confidence!

Now we have continual growth in our group AND we are learning to do more than just knit. A recent meetup was on making wire jewelry and one new member wants to teach us about Japanese book binding.

I will be teaching a meetup this fall for beginning knitters. We will make a cotton knit washcloth with a pine tree motif that they can give for Christmas presents. I will also teach a meetup for intermediate knitters where we will make a knitted Christmas stocking.

I love so many kinds of crafts but am trying to get my granddaughter to learn the arts of knit and crochet. She says she wants to be able to make things like I do. I really hope she continues with the passion that I have. I so love seeing the project slowly evolving into the end product! Just like when I was in high school and took photography; the taking of the pictures, going into the dark room to develop the negatives and from there the many different stages but the joy of seeing that picture slowly come through! Wow, to be able to say, "I made that!". There is a quote at the beginning of one of my knitting/crochet books that says it perfectly, "God gave me my hands, they are my life." I truly believe that. Thank you for giving me time to say these things. Blessings to you all!

One benefit of KIP is passing on the passion!  And today in a crafts store, I ran into a woman who commented on the fact that I was knitting while waiting in the LONG line at the checkout.  She was trying to find yarn to knit legwarmers for a granddaughter and I told her of a couple in that store.  She saw me in the yarn department of another store a few minutes later (I was trying to find a certain colour of yarn) and I gave her a recommendation for yarn in that store.  Passing it along!

I lead a group of knitters at our local Hobby Lobby store.  We (myself and another knitter) are teaching people to knit, but it doesn't end there.  We are also a support group for anyone who is going through a life challenge.  While we sit and knit, we go around the group and ask who has a concern they'd like to talk about.  The rest of us listen, and then give support and hugs.  There's nothing quite so wonderful as a bunch of women sitting and knitting while listening to their "sisters."  There's something about yarn, hands, and hearts working together that is like nothing else.  But there's a third component to our group as well.  We also knit items to benefit our community, such as totes for those who use walkers for mobility, and blankets for shelter animals.  Our group is called Knit Happens, and we have a great time learning to knit and sharing our hearts and handiwork.  And don't forget the laughter....that almost tops the knitting!

I'm so happy when I meet someone who's interested in my knitting and this is the best compliment when someone wants me to teach them. I learned to knit in a 4-H club 65 years ago and have lost track of the numbers of people I have taught and helped with their knitting over the years.  Just this morning I had a conversation with a granddaughter who was thanking me for a scarf I had made for her birthday and wanting to learn how to make things for herself and her daughters.  She thought she might go to JoAnn's to buy a kit but I was able to head her off with the promise thar we would meet and I would furnish fiber and needles with instructions.  She had not shown an interest when she was younger and I am so pleased that I have the opportunity to share this with her now.

I recently met a kind woman who was working at a Value Village (thrift store) here in Halifax.  I'd just discovered some yarn there, and had asked her if there was any more out back.  She isn't a knitter but said that she'd once picked up a Knitting for Dummies type book, but was too dumb to figure it out.  Nonsense!  I said that learning from the little illustrations in books hadn't worked for me either, but that it's much easier (and more fun!) with someone to show you.  I gave her my phone number and said I'd show her how to knit.  She should be calling me any day now, and it'd be very exciting to pass on the beginner knitter's dvd to her.  Fingers crossed!

I teach 2 different knitting groups: one at the high school, and one at the public library. Last week, a second-grade girl came to the library, wanting to make mittens for her new baby cousin, 3 pounds something (truly tiny), having never knit before. She caught on quickly, using the poem I use to teach kids: In through the front door, grab your sheep, back out the front door, and off we leap!

When she left, she'd completed one mitt: cast on, knit (only ten rows), then cast off and we sewed it up the side and across the top: voila!

We were both SO pleased! Her mom is bringing her back for a follow-up next week; I wonder what she'll want to make next?!!

I'm teaching middle school students to knit after school every Monday.  They are pushing for an extra day after school which is very exciting!  They start out with garter stitch book marks, then move on to increasing & decreasing on a washcloth, finally the purl stitch on a project of their choosing.  We are going to make hats and squares to be sewn together for patchwork blankets, both to be donated in our community.  These kids have the best hearts!  I love them!

Feeling the need to get together and work together, some of us started a crafting group at our local YMCA.  We have gradually grown to about 15 with all sorts of crafting going on.  We knit, crochet, tat, bead, quilt, and construct fabric items for ourselves and for charity.  We share patterns, materials, resources, ideas, excitement, creativity, an occasional lunch and our daily lives.  I'm the knitting helper and go-to person for knitting answers (sure appreciate the resources offered on-line!).  I am currently helping a novice knitter construct blocks for a knitted afghan from a book previously owned by her mother.  A great consequence of our times together is that we are becoming a support network of not only crafts but of friendship.   Love sharing crafts with others--it is so confidence building!

I'm teaching my daughter to knit for the second time. The first time was when she was in Girl Scouts and working on a badge. She is now grown with three children and is relearning to knit. So far she has made hats for the local hospital nursery and is working on a pair of yoga socks. I'm also introducing my 5 year old granddaughter to knitting. She calls it "yarning".

I'm thinking this is a good reason to knit in public as often as humanly possible this month! (Perhaps with an extra set of needles and a ball of yarn in my bag, just in case someone mentions that they'd like to learn!)  :)

I am in Nassau, Bahamas for the month of March visiting my daughter, and yesterday I began giving knitting lessons to one of her friends from Turks and Caicos,  Dorothy has always wanted to learn to knit but was never able to find someone who was willing to teach her.  I was so excited to have the opportunity to be the one to fulfill her dream!  She did very well with her first lesson - knit and purl.  We will continue weekly for the rest of the month, and I hope that by the time I leave she will be well on her way to independent knitting!  The DVDs would be just wonderful for her.  I could bring them to her when I return in June for the birth of my daughter's baby.  Thanks for the opportunity!

And, sadly, I never have been prodigious in quantity or quality. Any "prodigy" is in the collection of wonderful sewing and knitting books and fabulous-to-hold stash of yarns and fabrics.

A little over a year ago I had a serious finger infection and had to drop knitting, my favorite, but YOU ALL will help me pick-up-sticks and get going again - especially now that I don't go to work every day.
