Crazy for Cowls

Mar 13, 2013

I think I've knit four cowls this winter. One was a slip-stitch pattern, one a lace pattern, one a linen-stitch pattern, and one a plain stockinette pattern.

Oddly, I think the stockinette cowl is my favorite. Probably because it's knit from a 100-percent cashmere yarn that I got for Christmas. This is a case of letting the yarn do the talking; it's so soft and beautiful that it doesn't need a stitch pattern to make it shine. And it's bright orange, which I love! There's one more cowl on the needles, and it's a good one: feather and fan pattern knit with Qiviuk yarn, which is muskox fur. It's the softest yarn I've ever felt, except for pure angora. I am truly blessed with beautiful yarn.

There are lots of reasons to knit cowls like crazy; here are just five:

1. They're usually quick projects.
2. They're great for using up those special, single skeins of yarn.
3. They're a fun way to try new stitch patterns.
4. They're great gifts.
5. They're really useful!

So, since I only have one cowl on the needles, I need to cast on another one! I'm not sure which one to do, so I'm putting the decision in your hands. Here are the choices:

Inishbofin Cowl by Heidi Todd Kozar

Working cables in the round is fun and fast! The Inishbofin is knit from a merino/alpaca blend—yum—on size 8 needles.

You know my love affair with cables is never-ending, right?
Orba Cowl by Robin Ulrich

This cutie uses a welted chevron stitch to add a lot of texture and drape.

It's a pretty pattern, but I would knit it in a different color. Yellow is not my friend!
Destiny Cowl by Denise Twum

I kind of love this. It's knit from super bulky yarn on size 13 needles in a simple rib/garter stitch combo that makes ruching.

I love how it poofs out in the ribbed sections!
Maryse Cowl by Amy Christoffers

This is a long cowl, knitted from a beautiful, lofty, wool/mohair blend. It's knit on size 8s in an easy-to-memorize lace pattern, so this would be a quick one!

It just looks so cozy wrapped a couple of times around the neck! Love the color, but not on me. Maybe red.
What do you think? Which one should I knit? Leave a comment below and let me know, and maybe we'll do a quickie cowl knit-along with the winning cowl pattern.

All of these patterns area available in Knitscene magazine issues from 2012. You can download all four now, or get them on CD. Knitscene is so much fun. I love it!

Now leave a comment and tell me what to knit!

Cheers,

Oh wow! What a choice...I really love cables, so the Inishbofin caught me first, but, having just finished my very first lace pattern, I'm really intrigued by the Maryse cowl. Think I'd have to flip a coin or go see what yarn I've got. Whichever yarn I ran into first, would be the decider, I think.

Personally, I may have to do both!

With St Patrick's Day upon us, why not choose the Aran style cables of the Inishbofin Cowl.  I am thinking that the cables would pull the whole tube in which would be a good shape for a cowl.  The ribbing on the bottom and top would spread out a bit where they sit on chest and chin.  It would be a good first cable project for someone looking to learn the technique.

I am a cowl or snood( as we call them) freak and i knit them for adults, kiddies and babies... i make up my own patterns along nthe way and while i love all of the cowls the Maryse is my favorite.

when knitting a single cowl- not one that gets wrapped around a frew times,  another different tip is to make it slightly longer than the 20" and twist it before you stitch it up > just a  little different

My sister is in love with cowls and asked me to knit her one recently, but I didn't have a pattern, so I just cast on a bunch of stitches with some bulky yarn that she liked and some big fat needles. I love the simplicity of knitting in the round because you can just be done whenever you're satisfied with your project. I did a very simple pattern of K5, yo, K2tog, repeat. It turned out to be a lovely eyelet and was so soft and gorgeous. I did an odd number of stitches too, so it wasn't lined up, but on an angle. I would love one for myself now, for next winter!

The item Destiny Cowl by Denise Twum looks like it's just my style, my colors too. Since I have a footlocker full of wool and wool blends, your pattern might just be the one for a knit-wit like me.

I think the "Orbs" pattern would give most mileage.....Destiny is very eye-catching, but super-bulky gives fewer options; I've made the Orbs, and found it very versatile; it's light when the weather is warmer, and snuggles nicely under a jacket when it's colder; cables look great    I'm addicted to Aran knits......but don't drape as well. Go Orbs, is my advice!

One more really big reason to knit cowls: If you know a new mom, she could really use cowls to replace her scarves!  I know this from recent experience, juggling a baby and tripping over your scarf as it falls open/off is ridiculous.

The Maryse or the Inishbofin (I agree F Whiskers). They are both cool. I have been knitting cowls like there's no tomorrow. My daughter is in town visiting from up north, and I invited her to choose, to take whatever she liked. She chose three: in different patterns, different weight yarns. I liked the way she pondered the choices and thought about how she'd wear/use them. I am now making that Gaptastic (or is it Gapfantastic?) cowl in a charcoal gray that's about 15 in wide in a seed stitch. I actually have made it twice before and it's so pretty and cool (as in great looking) that I keep coming back to it. I am also working on a canaletto cowl in a lively bright rose color that will be finished soon. But cowls are indeed great projects to finish fast, use up yarn or carry along when you are out and about doing errands and might have some minutes to kill. When one has to wait, knit.

LOOKING FOR AN   OOOld pattern.........from 1969 ..........  sweaters for men and women, both pullovers and wrap arounds....mostly just knit and pearl!......the trick to this pattern was that it was made with 1" needles and 6 strands of yarn at one time!    Was a very bulky sweater, but great for both fall and spring just this side of the cold weather coming and leaving!!

Does anyone remember this (or better yet, HAVE thispattern still?)   I have a very sick, but stylish granddaughter who could use the weight of this sweater almost year round!

I made this for my brother and he wore it to shreds!   It was the first sweater that I knit (senior year in college) after learning to knit at my mom's knees!  It worked up so fast and the pattern was so easy (even though it looks difficult due to the bulk) that I've been knitting ever since!   Thanks for checking everyone!
