Zealana Kiwi Yarn and the Cassandre Cowl: Beautiful Luxury

May 27, 2014

I've fallen in love with one of the patterns in the brand new 2014 issue of Knitscene Accessories. It's the Cassandre Cowl by Julia Barrowcliffe. It's knit with Zealana Kiwi yarn, which is luxurious and wonderful to work with.

It's a stranded colorwork cowl worked in the round. The decorative picot edges really add a bit of pizzazz! And I love the color combo; I've always been a big fan of gray and gold together.

The Cassandre Cowl, knitted with Zealana Kiwi Yarn

Isn't that pretty? It's a special design, knitted with a special yarn.

"Zealana Kiwi has a beautiful light halo that is well suited to colorwork," says designer Julia Barrowcliffe. "It is a lovely soft yarn that provides warmth as well as drape and makes a cozy fabric perfect for wearing next to the skin as a scarf or cowl."

Kiwi is one of Zealana's ultra resilient Performa Series blends. Its unique makeup of 40% fine New Zealand merino, 30% organic cotton, and 30% brushtail possum make it the perfect choice for garments that need to go the extra mile and back again . . . with lots of washings in between! (Yes, it's machine washable!) One of the many wonderful things about this yarn is that it's 55% warmer than merino wool. And it's less likely to pill than garments knit from 100% cashmere or ultra fine merino. Love that!

Here are the two colors used to knit Cassandre:

Zealana Kiwi Fingering Weight, in #03, Sunset
Zealana Kiwi Fingering Weight, #10, Granite

There are many other beautiful colors in this line, too, in both fingering and lace weight.

The design on the Cassandre Cowl is an art deco floral pattern. I'm a huge admirer of anything art deco, and when I saw this cowl, I thought "yes, please."

I was lucky enough to be gifted the yarn, and even though I have three projects on the needles, I cast on Cassandre. It's so nice to work with Kiwi, and the pattern is really beautiful.

Check your local yarn shop for Zealana Kiwi, and cast on your own Cassandre Cowl! It's a showstopper.

Cheers,
