I simply don't know of any yarn with that pronounced a variation between thick and thin. Perhaps the Malebrigo which has some mild variation, or Noro's Kureyon. I did thi yarn: one dk weight linen and one worsted weight wool.

HOWEVER, I looked carefully at the photo in my copy of IK Spring 2002, and a lot of the texture interest is caused not by the garter stitch but by the extreme variation in the yarn. Don't get me wrong, I love Sally Melville's book "The Knit Stitch" and I love the garter stitch, but I don't think garter stitch with a smooth wool would look sophisticated or rustic. The answer might be to introduce a texture pattern, preferably simple. My first choice in swatching would to take a worsted weight yarn (not heavy worsted) and swatch the Slip-Stitch Weave from Barbara Walker's Second Treasury of Knitting Patterns page 22:

Odd number of stitches
Rows 1 and 3 (wrong side) purl
Row 2: P1, *sl 1 wyib, p1; rep from *.
Row 4: P2, *sl 1 wyib, p1; rep from *, end p1.

Key: P = purl
sl 1 wyib = slip one stitch as if to purl, holding yarn in back.

Well, that's my 2 cents.

kuaikuai

re: And The Winning Free Pattern Is...

Same as some of the other folks: I have the other two patterns in my collection. I am far more likely to vote for older patterns than newer ones, simply because my issues are newer. Also, may I suggest we reclaim the more elegant and correct word "slub" yarn for those yarns that are "thick and thin"? It is less of a mouthful and just as accurate.

re: And The Winning Free Pattern Is...

I voted for the Rustic Jacket because I thought it was the only one I was most likely to wear. This seemed perfect until I saw it was garter stitch. I might still consider making it if I fell in love with the perfect yarn. But the thought of all that garter stitch makes me antsy and I can't help thinking that the least bit of droopiness or squooshiness in the knitted fabric would totally cancel out the sophisticated shape. Could make for some interesting high-stakes swatching--maybe a tweed? I eagerly await the discussion of yarn types and substitutions! And despite my slightly cranky tone I adore KD. Thank you, Sandi!

re: And The Winning Free Pattern Is...

I like classic styles and lines.
