Knit 3 (to 5) stitches as a border. Slip into the back of the first stitch. Knit remaining border stitches. Knit pattern. Knit all but last of border stitches. Knit into the back of the last stitch. This gives a good firm edging.

Just as a comical aside: My mother started my sister and me knitting when we were about 4 or 5 years old. In those days penny suckers came on a little wooden stick. Our mother sharpened one end of the stick, cast on with left-over wool from one of her projects and we had what we needed for knitting little squares. Waste not, want not! Sucker sticks were our first knitting needles!

i agree with your comments entirely. I never knitted a scarf until many many years after "real knitting" like complicated sweaters and cardigans, dismissing scarves as beginner's knitting only. How wrong could I be! I have come to really appreciate scarves and have become a convert to the degree my family and friends ask - "what - another scarf"!. I can't get enough of them - they're quick to knit, with fantastic yarns and unique patterns that are available today, and they come out of the wardrobe much more frequently than my sweaters and cardigans which usually have to wait for a cool day and when I will be outdoors - air-conditioning everywhere has certainly changed our dress habits. But scarves and other accessories provide an opportunity to wear your hand knits much more frequently which I thoroughly enjoy. Kind regards, Karin (Australia)
