Episode 602 - Knit Together!

Jan 20, 2011

It's a party on Knitting Daily TV, episode 602! For centuries, fiber artists have gathered together to knit and crochet for great causes, as well as just for fun. Join host Eunny Jang and experts Kristin Omdahl and Shay Pendray as they visit with guests and demonstarte great ways to craft together.

Watch a preview of episode 602:

Getting Started:

Eunny demonstrates techniques for modular knitting, which is knitting that involves making small pieces of knitted fabric, like afghan squares, which are then joined together. These types of projects are especially popular with groups making blankets and throws for charity. Learn how to solve problems when you have varying pieces, which is sometimes the case when many people join together on one project, by blocking and picking up stitches. You'll also learn great ways to join these modular pieces, such as the mattress stitch or baseball stitch, both demonstrated by Eunny.

Designer Spotlight:

Shay Pendray joins the Queen of the Knit-Along Debbie Stoller at The National NeedleArts Association trade show. Debbie, the author of many popular knitting books including her newest Stitch Nation, has always wanted to show off how cool knitting can be. Her new yarn line is of good quality and accessible to knitters across the country, and she hopes that the patterns and yarn spark knitters to continue and enjoy their craft. Crochet Corner:

Crochet expert Kristin Omdahl demonstrates how to join crochet squares using a crochet hook with both a slip stitch and a slip stitch and chain. Plus, she'll show you a decorative seaming idea, a button-band, and a button hole technique. Crocheting afghans are a great way to work with others, and the joining process can be just as fun.

How-To:

Laura Bryant and Barry Klein are back for another season, and on this episode they join Shay to talk about the importance of guage. With their new book The New Knitter's Template, Laura and Barry demonstrate how you can change a pattern into a different gauge then it originally calls for to allow you to customize your patterns using whatever yarn you'd like. The book does all the math for you, making this process easy! Download the Technicolor Jacket pattern for free!

Quick Tip:

Eunny is back to demonstrate three different tricks for dealing with too-short yarn ends. You can weave/thread your needle before inserting it into your project, use a crochet hook, or do a whip-stitch technique using thread to attach the yarn tail to your work. All three of these techniques make dealing with too-short yarn ends a worry of the past. Download this tip and more with the 22 Techniques for Knitters of All Levels eBook.

Can anyone tell me where to find the pattern for the skirt displayed behind Debbie and Shay during the interview?  is it knit or crochet, anyone? I have looked and looked and can't find anything. Thanks, Julie
