Loved the no-jog intarsia technique, but can't figure out how to use it for small intarsia work.

I'm knitting a newborn sweater with small red hearts where in certain places the heart is  only 3 or 5 stitches across.  There simply don't seem to be enough red stitches to accommodate the decreases needed on either side of the heart to slope the work.

Any help would be appreciated!  Thanks.
