Episode 911 - Shrinking is Good

Jul 9, 2012

We've all accidentally shrunken our wool sweaters in the wash, but on this episode of Knitting Daily TV we talk about when shrinking out knitwear is intentional, called felting.

Watch a preview of episode 911:

Getting Started:
On this episode's Getting Started segment, host Eunny Jang gives a tutorial on how to correctly measure your felted fabric, before and after felting. The blue hat seen on this segment is from Interweave Knits Fall 2012.
Sponsored by Interweave.
Eunny is wearing the Clover Camisole by Heather Zoppetti, from the Summer 2012 issue of Knitscene.

Accessorize Me!
On this episode's Accessorize Me segment Eunny joins up with knitwear designers and instructors Laura Bryant and Barry Klein for a tutorial on mitered corners. This knitting technique is easy to master and the possibilities are endless. With the ability to knit a corner, you can add depth and dimensions to your knitting. Download the Rendezvous Mitered Garter St. Scarf, the free scarf pattern seen on this episode in brown, and practice your mitered knitting.
Sponsored by Prism Arts, Inc. and Trendsetter Yarns.

Yarn Spotlight:
Clara Parkes and Eunny are back in the Knitting Lab to talk about tweed yarns. Donegal tweed gets it's name from a region of Ireland called Donegal, and featured on this episode is a popular 100% wool tweed yarn from Tahki Stacy Charles called Donegal Tweed. See what this particular yarn looks like knit up with it's tweed effects both knit and unwashed and felted. Also shown are blended tweeds such as Elsebeth Lavold's silky wool (dark orange) and Serendipity's cotton and wool tweed yarn (light orange).
Sponsored by Tahki Stacy Charles.

Quick Tip:
Eunny wraps up this episode with more felting. She compares and contrasts a variety of felted fabrics so you can see the felted effects each type of yarn may have and what added design elements look like after the wash.

Where can I get the sweater pattern in the Accessorize Me segment.  I do not want the scaf pattern, just the sweaters.

Where did the pattern for the grey and white bag come from? I thought it was really interesting.

How can I get the pattern for that beautiful felted cable and bobble bag Euny was showing at the end of the program?

I agree with Robbin Allan. I would love the pattern for the white bobble/cable bag on this segment.  Is it from a Knits issue?

I found the pattern for the grey hat and the white bag in Interweave Knits Fall 2012.  I got it with a free trial to the magazine.  The bag is called Aspen Satchel by Erica Schlueter and the hat is Zelda's Cloche by Shelley Gerber.
