Download Better Than Booties Baby Socks

Not keen on baby booties? Try baby socks. Ann Budd has designed five adorable pairs of tiny socks to make precious little feet even more precious. All feature Priscilla Gibson-Roberts’s short-row heel and toe (Fall 2000 Interweave Knits, page 76) and decorative zigzag bind-off. Worked in washable wool, these socks are easy to care for—an important feature in babywear. Instructions for the Ruffle Rib, Braided Cable and Hugs and Kisses socks are in the Summer 2005 issue of Interweave Knits. Instructions for the Ruffle Rib (again), Chevron Lace, and Cable Rib socks are given here.

Finished Size: About 4¾" (12 cm) foot circumference and 3 ½"(9 cm) long from back of heel to tip of toe.

Yarn: Lorna’s Laces Shepherd Sock (80% superwash wool, 20%nylon; 215 yd [196 m]/50 g): 1 skein will make 3 pairs of socks. Shown in #21NS powder blue, # 44NS old rose, and #15NS chino.

Needles: Size 0 (2 mm): set of 4 or 5 double-pointed (dpn). Adjust needle size if necessary to obtain the correct gauge.

Notions: Markers (m); cable needle (cn); tapestry needle.

Gauge: 18 sts and 26 rnds = 2" (5 cm) in St st worked in the rnd.

Skill Level: Experienced.

Actually made these from the magazine after I sent out to get the pattern when my internet was down.

They are TOO Cute and all the new mommies I work with loved them.Now they beg me to make the toddlers soxs!

I have knit each of the variations included in the free download. What fun and much appreciated by the moms who got them. Unfortunately, the back issue is no longer available; my local library system doesn't carry the title either. Is there any chance that the missing variations (cables and XOs) will be made available -- even if PDF and for a fee? I'd definitely invest in such a timeless pattern

I am working the cable rib socks and need some help interpreting the abreviations for the 2nd row of the cable rib chart.  It says: i/I RC:k2tog, then knit first st again, then slip both stitches off needle.

Does this mean that I knit 2 stitches together, the knit one of the loops that is over the stitch again?, and put on a cable needle?

Please help!

Christa...the abbrev in the cable rib chart means that you are in effect doing a sort-of cable w/o a cable needle. I'll try + explain...the abbrev actually means that you cross 1 st over 1 st... a right cross...by doing the following: knit the first 2 sts tog...do not slip off right N yet...knit the 1st st again....then slip both sts off the left N . You haven't changed your actual st count any...the st lost by k2tog is replaced by knitting the 2nd st again before slipping. It does look like you did a cable though. Hope this helps.    Andrea

Thank you Andrea! Actually it does. I wasn't catching the don't take it off the needle and couldn't see how it could work. Thank you!!! I will now have to try these again!

Would You Please consider placing the following Ann Budd Baby Socks from Better Than Booties Patterns for sale: Braided Cable and Hugs and Kisses. I have a Hugs & Kisses blanket pattern that these would go great with. Before finding out they were not available they were of the 3 I immediatley decided that I liked most.
