I’ve always been fascinated by Faroese shawls, those lovely, winglike garments devised by the women of the Faroe Islands over a hundred years ago. These shawls drape gracefully over your shoulders; their ingenious shoulder shaping ensures that they stay in place as you move about. This shawlette is easier to knit than you might think, and the yarn is more wonderful to work with and to wear than you can imagine.

The Comfort Shawl, a similar Faroese Isle design is also available on Knitting Daily!

Finished Size: 60" around lower edge and 151⁄2" long from back of neck to lower edge, after blocking.

Yarn: Jade Sapphire Mongolian Cashmere 4-Ply (100% cashmere; 155 yd (141 m)/55 g): lupine (periwinkle), 2 skeins.

Needles: Size 10 (6 mm): 24" circular (cir). Adjust needle size if necessary to obtain the correct gauge.

Notions: Size J/10 (6 mm) crochet hook; smooth waste yarn; markers (m); removable markers or safety pins; tapestry needle.

Gauge: 16 sts and 25 rows = 4" in St st, after blocking.

Skill Level: Intermediate.

What a pretty little cape-like shawl! I worry that I won't be able to gracefully wear a shawl, so maybe this is a good one for starting off with.

It is very pretty... but it is always good to see both front and back!

bpj: I have made three from this pattern. One short and the other 2 much longer. They are so pretty and I always am asked did you make that? I can't believe it, is what they say when I say yes.

Very pretty, but is it possible for you to send a photo of the front, Sandi?  Or could Betty J. send a photo of the front and her longer version?  Thank you!

Yes, that shawlette is beautiful.

Well, there are more Bettys... I wonder how many...

BettyJ is the one who's knitted this - love to see the pic.

I'm Betty BJ - I haven't knitted this - yet  :)

Once again, a wonderful freebie from Knitting Daily - thank you :)

Take care,

Betty BJ in Ontario - who's not yet knit this pattern...

I haven't knitted this yet but I'd suggest a quick peek at the free shawl pattern called "Comfort Shawl" for a front view. This pattern may have, or not, a more lacier look but the drape is there. It shows the way it flows over the shoulders and the edges come to a sort of point.

Happy knitting.

Sherry in Seattle - where it is summer again!

Looks nice and light to carry around for when I go on holiday, European churches (I live in England) like your shoulders to be covered.  So this is definitely one I will make - I usually carry a shawl around with me, but it can be bulky and bits fall out of the bag.  Patr

I have never tried a shawl but I will try this one.  I am a short person, and this may be better than a long one.  carol

Very Nice...but why would you not post a photo of the front???  I think this is a mistake that should not be repeated judging from the comments posted. Sheila

Some good pictures (front and clearer one of lace pattern on the back) are on Ravelry, but you need to sign in as a member.  Links below.  (Might need to copy and paste if links don't work)

I would like to make this swalette for my daughter's wedding in one month. I am having trouble proof reading the pattern. I do not understand the "pm" in the Row 1 direction. Also Row 4 for example says:" sl m, p11, pm, p19  etc. I assume the slm is slip marker but I do not understand what pm is??Thank you for any help you can give me.

Mara wrote re: Summer Shawlette

SandyJ pm means place marker.  I hope that helps!

Apparently this is a very popular pattern with some folks...here's another Ravelry link.  There's even one example where she added beads for a matron of honor!

I love knitting lacy things and this would be perfect for my over-air-conditioned office.  So for all of you who wanted more pics, enjoy!

Beginning knitter, this is my first upgrade from blankets and booties and scarves! I think I can do it, but was wondering what the pattern means when it says

to "work so selvage at end of row is uppermost" and the next instructions are "bring yarn to the front. Skipping first slipped selvage st closest to needle"

Just starting and already lost?

It would be nice to know what size this summer shawlette will be.

Is it a child's pattern, or is it for an adult?

Who if anyone responds to these questions?

Is anyone here to respond to these questions? Is there another place to go for help?
