Called the Thórdís shawl, the original of this traditional Icelandic shawl is part of the Icelandic Craft Council’s collection of textiles. It is thought to have been knitted by Thórdís Egilsdóttir, a resident of a small fishing village on the west coast of Iceland and well known for her craftsmanship and skill with handspun yarns. Originally published in the July/August 1996 issue of Piecework magazine

Finished Size: The finished shawl measures 76 inches (193 cm) across the shoulder edge and 37 inches (94 cm) deep at the center back.

Yarn: Fingering-weight wool yarn. Shown in Jaggerspun Maine Line 2/8 (100% wool; 2240 yd [2048 m]/16 oz [454 g]).

Individual color amounts for a multi-colored shawl:

Natural (white): 3½ oz/99 g [490 yd/449 m];

Graphite (dark gray) and arrowhead (gray-beige): 1 oz/28 g each [140 yd/128 m each];

Suede (medium brown) and sable (dark brown): ¾ oz/21 g each [105 yd/96 m each];

Pewter (light gray), shale (medium gray), sand (beige): and black, ½ oz/14 g [70 yd/64 m each].

If making the shawl all in one color:

9 oz/255 g [1260 yd/1152 m] total yarn.

Yarn available in smaller than 1-lb units from Halcyon Yarn (www.halcyonyarn.com) and other suppliers.

Needles: Size 4 (3.5 mm): 32-inch (81.2-cm) circular knitting needle.

Notions: Steel crochet hook, size B/2 (2.5 mm); markers (optional).

Skill level: Intermediate.

Pattern Correction: There was an error in the symbol key for the charts on page 5 of the PDF. The key for the hash symbol should read p1, k2, ppso . The written row-by-row instructions are correct. The PDF was corrected 7/23/07.

I had started knitting this one when it first came out and put it down and forgot about it until recently.  I just finished the main body of the shawl and it is magnificent.  I can't wait to finish it!!  it is not at all as difficult as i imagined it would be!  I learned quite a few new techniques with this one.  thanks again for such a kick butt free pattern!!! You guys rock!

Sue :)

Well, I've printed it.  Now to gather the yarns for it.  And, I just may change the colors.  Am I totally nuts?  Or am I just a knitter?

This Icelandic Shawl is beautiful!!  I haven't used circular knitting needles yet (just DPNs). But this makes me want to start.  Thanks.

I'm still confused about the pattern correction.  Do you mean we should p1, K2tog, ppso?  or do you just pass the purl stitch over two knitted stitches on your needle??  Thanks for any help!

Ginger
