I love this hat!!  I made it for a friend of a friend, and now want one for myself!

I made two of these hats with a variegated faux suede yarn and they turned out very cute.  I did have to adjust the pattern a little to compensate for the yarn's heavier bulk, but it wasn't much of a change.  I simply made a couple less ch-2 sps in round one and followed the pattern the rest of the way.

Help!  I'm new to crochet and I'm learning the abbreviations and how to read them, but I can't decipher what something in this pattern means.  Can you help me?

Could someone spell out exactly what this means....

sl st in 3rd ch of beg ch-5 to join ---8 ch-2 sps.

I understand slip stitch in 3rd chain of beginning.....but then I get lost.

TIA!

8 ch-2 sps

that just means you will have eight chain 2 spaces once this round is complete.  It is there to help you use your crochet as a guide to knowing where you are in the pattern and to keep you on track.  If you end up with nine chain 2 spaces you will know that something is off and you can fix it before you continue with the next round.

Hope this helps.

I usually detest wearing hats of any kind, so I decided to make this. The entire time I was crocheting it, I'm thinking, "Who is going to be the recipient of this crocheted hat?? Hmmmm, Mom? nope the hat would have to be a perfect match to a winter coat. Elsa (sister)? nope, she lives in Houston. Jonathan (my brother)? A varigated yarn with pink and purple (with other colours as well), nope."

Well, well, well. When I was done, I, as in me, tried it on. (twirling on tiptoes around my house) I loved it on me!!!! I wore it nearly every day after I made this--back in March or so.  Niow that the weather is cooling, I may have to make a bunch of these to match my outfits, or wear out the one I made. Don't quite know what I'm gonna do yet, but I DO know I'm going to be wearing it again!!

Hope I made y'all smile!

Does anyone know where I can find a "head mannequin" for a cap I'm designing? I've doneall kinds of searches, checked Rio Grande and other websites but all they seem to stock are mannequins for necklaces; the ones with heads have only partial heads (not useful to me).

Or if anyone has a mannequin head that they'd like to sell, as long as it's in useable condition, please send me a picture and we can discuss details like price.

I'm looking for a medium-size head mannequin.

Thanks.

Christine, from Colorado.

ChristineK, I don't know if you will get this because it's been a while since you posted, but you can get styrofoam heads at beauty supply stores (at least around here you can). I got some to use to model some hats I was selling. Good luck!
