Elizabeth Zimmermann’s Maltese Fisherman’s Hat is one of her sculptural designs and fits the head beautifully: the flaps curve around the ears and may be buttoned (or tied) up or down. The back-of-neck shaping is critical to keep the hat form-fitting and snug. In this updated version of her classic, Elizabeth’s daughter Meg Swansen adds colorwork and texture options.

I made a couple of these about 2 1/2 years ago in adult size.  They work up very quickly -- I was visiting my sister and the hat was a gift for her, intended to keep her warm while tending the livestock on her farm.  After wearing the hat once, she said she liked it but it was too big.  I made a second one that day using needles a size smaller and that one was perfect for her.  The yarn was an alpaca from KnitPicks which has now been discontinued.

I made this up for one of my daughters. Another one saw it and requested one just like it! It goes together very quickly and is very cute.

We holiday in a group of 10, I knit one hat as a birthday present for one of the men, now the other 4 want one too. Good that they're quick to knit!

Great directions!  I have the original book this pattern came from but could not figure it out but these directions help greatly!  I can't wait to make it for my dear husband who works out in the cold, snowy Michigan weather.
