What could be more comforting than being wrapped up in the warmth of a colorful quilt? Very loosely based on the traditional Log Cabin quilt block, Mags Kandis worked this wrap/oversized scarf square by square in the easy and satisfying mitered-square method of color knitting. This is as effortless as working in stripes, but the results are far more impressive. As this project is worked one color as a time, it’s perfect for thinking about and playing with color.

Finished Size: About 16½" (42 cm) wide and 66" (168 cm) long, after blocking.

Yarn: DK (#3 Light). Shown here: Rowan Kidsilk Haze (70% super kid mohair; 30% silk; 230 yd [210 m]/25 g): #597 jelly (lime green; A), #596 marmalade (orange; B), #583 blushes (rose; C), #600 dewberry (lavender; D), #582 trance (medium blue; E), #578 swish (gold; F), #581 meadow (pale blue; G), #595 liqueur (dark red; H), and #588 drab (grey; I), 1 ball each. See individual yardage amounts below.

Please note that color #578 swish (gold) has been discontinued.

Needles: Size 7 (4.5 mm). Note: a 16" (40 cm) bamboo circular needle is recommended. Adjust needle size if necessary to obtain the correct gauge.

Notions: Marker (m); tapestry needle.

Gauge: Small square measures 2¾" (7 cm) square; large square measures 5½" (14 cm) square, both after blocking.

Skill level: Easy.

I'm wondering if anyone has ever tried this in a laceweight alpaca? Any suggestions on less pricey yarn(s) to substitute for for the Kidsilk Haze?

Well Kate H.... you could always try LionBrand Microspun (also a #3 DK weight)... they've got some really GREAT colors, even a few neon, and Microspun has a good feel and a nice drape.

I feel foolish and really ashamed that I wasted so much money in the yarn for this scarf.   It works up easily enough but no one wants a piece that is difficult to clean.

I may be the last person on earth willing to block.  I'm afraid to give the wrap to anyone I know.  Go for cheaper yarn that can be washed and dried with less invested time and trouble.

A less expensive yarn than Rowan Kidsilk Haze to use is Crystal Palace Kid Merino, which is 28% kid mohair, 28% merino wool, and 44% microfiber nylon, and has about 240 yds per 25 gram ball. See the colors at www.straw.com/.../kid_merino_card.html. The cost is about half of Kidsilk Haze because it does not have the silk in it, but that also makes it a bit less soft. It is still a handwash only yarn.

Better still, try some Classic Elite cotton - great yarn, yardage and price - plus, easy to care for.  Other than that, try some super wash wool, great selection of colors and prices.

Don't fear handwashing!

The secret that I use is to wash by hand then put it in the washer, JUST ON SPIN, to get out the water. Then rinse by hand and again put it in the washer for SPIN only cycle.

This way you have a just damp knit item without blotting in towels, etc. Then I just spread it out on the counter (or on top of dryer for smaller items) in my kitchen, and shape it by hand and allow it to dry.

I do have a large island in the center of my kitchen which allows me to do large articles, but if you don't, spread towels in the corner of a room (beach towels are especially good) and pat into place. Leave to dry.

The key is to have the pieces spun out very dry in the spin cycle of you washer.

Hope this helps!

Leave on towels in a corner - clearly you have no cats!! #:-)

Any chance you could translate this neat quilt pattern into a chrochet pattern?  jsb~~

On the subject of drying, I dry and block everything (sweaters, felted items, either hand knit hats and bags or felted sweaters for making totes, my linen and flax clothes) on my kids' TRAMPOLINE.  It doesn't have those side nets on it, tho.  So everything is easy to reach, it's flat, it's off the ground and there's air flow through the mesh.

Be careful you don't spin creases into your hand knit work!  I did that with a pair of felted slippers.. ahhh.

To Deb H.

Can you elaborate on the "be careful you don't spin creases into your hand knit work!"  I've only felted once or twice, but would love to know what you mean by this!

Wow, do these posts give me an idea! I could take a cotton yarn (something with virtually no stretch) and knit up a big rectangle with with a nice open "weave" (the kind used for knitting shopping or beach bags, only bigger), using great big needles, and attach "tie-downs" to the corners. The I could stretch it between two chairs and use it for drying and blocking items too large to fit on my ironing board.

Cheers,

Carol

I don't mind hand wash, dry flat.  My adult children, on the other hand, have asked that I PLEASE use yarn that they can put in their washing machine.

I agree with the posts concerning $$ for yarn.  This knitting *hobby* is expensive.  Most people (gift recipients) don't realize the amount of $$ and time that goes into a piece...

I do love the look of this wrap.

Will have to go thru my stash and see if I have yarn that I can substitute... hmmm... if my eyes are working, it's 9 colors... 9 colors of yarn(s) that are compatible...

Take care,

Betty BJ

To JeniferF: I believe that what was meant by "be careful you don't spin creases into your hand knit work!" is the piece(s) can get folded in the washer as they spin.  The folds can be permanent in some pieces, especially in felt.

Hi I have a question about the small square. When I follow this pattern my piece is a triangle and not a square. What am I doing wrong?

EllenS wrote re: Modern Quilt Wrap

I was considering trying this pattern using the new Berroco Comfort DK, which has a similar gague and a lot of colors.  It is a lot less expensive, which may be more appropriate for my beginner knitter status.  Has anyone tried this?

BonnieR wrote re: Modern Quilt Wrap

reply to Jessica...Just guessing...are you doing the decreases on both sides (k2tog slip marker k2tog tbl)??  You want to decrease on one side (even numbered, I think) and just KNIT on the other side.  If you decrease too fast I think it would become a triangle.

Question for Sandy or Mags...Is this knit with a single strand or double?  The only other time I have knit with Kid Silk Haze it was with it doubled, but the directions don't mention this.  Please clarify.  Thanks!

Hi,

Anybody have an idea of what to use in susbstitute to the gold color that is not available anymore?

BonnieR wrote re: Modern Quilt Wrap

A big thank you to JeanneH for her recommendation of Crystal Palace Kid Merino.  I bought some for this pattern and it is working out great!  I am knitting mine with two strands held together.  I did a swatch using a single strand and while it was pretty and light as a feather, I thought the colors would be better with two strands held together and I am happy I am doing it this way.  I think if I was using KidSilk Haze I would do the same thing as they are almost the same weight.

It is fun to see this wrap take shape as you work through the squares with all the lovely colors.  The changing of colors definitely slows down the process a little, but I can see that it will be worth it in the end.  Also, I am stopping periodically to weave in my ends so I don't have to do them all at the end.

Happy knittting all!  Bonnie

I have a confession.  I don't knit.  I am however, a mad crocheter.  The cool thing about crochet is with a little ingenuity I can modify many kniting patterns and styles to crochet.  I saw this wrap and absoutely love it.  And thought, hmmm... I can crochet this.  So, I made a test block, and voila!  Since crochet has three strands to a stitch width, the result will be a bit thicker, I can compensate for that by using a finer yarn, or a bigger stitch.  I'm going to hunt down some yarn this weekend.  Thanks.

I'm a new knitter and I have really enjoyed reading all the comments.  This project is so lively looking that I would venture to make it with any super fine yarn.  I'm not afraid to do my own thing and I think I will with this one.  Thanks, gals,

I love the looks of this wrap but I'm not sure what DK weight is?  The yarn used in the pattern is a bit too expensive for me, so I need to know what to look for in a less expensive yarn.

I would like the pattern too, but I keep getting a 404 error message telling me to contact the website.

Can someone look into this for us. I would imagine that whatever corrections that were done on the PDF has not gone through neatly and that's what's causing the error.

Back to handwashing and drying, I wash in the morning in the washing machine on hand wash and lay flat on my bed with the overhead fan going on high.  I flip after lunch and by bedtime, it is all dry.  Moving air is the trick as I've gotten this to work on all but rainy days.

I think it's a tad darker than "Swish" but since it's a patchwork theme, the color should work.
