Looks like it'll be an easy, fun pattern to do in the car next week. For some reason, I bought LOTS of variegated Sugar 'n Cream when a store went out of business years ago and I need some way to use it up.

How about doing it in a thick wool for more insulation when used as a potholder?

I have done the mitered squares in a vest.  My mistake was using a silk yarn.  It was difficult because it was slick.  The result was nice and I think I'll enjoy it.  My word of caution would be to make sure you know which side is the right side.  I had to take out many squares because I started on the wrong side.  Have fun....MB

this looks neat I think I will give this one a try. I am loving potholders.  I used to think "how boring" but they are fun easy and require very little time.  Make nice give-aways,  thats something you just hand a friend and its aQ JUST 'CAUSE...........' OR  a stocking stuffer I am going to start carring them in my car.  They say you cant tip a bagger but you can give them a pot holder with a bow.  when they help you out to the car.  Our store it is USUALLY A women. but when I give them to a guy I usually say This is great when you BAR - B Q.  I save  the bigger ones for them...

Any way I like the looks of this one.

I knitted a baby blanket this way, using lots of leftover yarn, it came out beautiful, and my grandchildren are enjoying it now whenever they take a nap at our home. It was fun, since I chose the colors as I went along, and the results were excellent. Didn't think about the I-cord at the time, and instead made a crochet finishing.

Oh my goodness, but I am having a lot of difficulty making sense of the order of the squares from one diagram to another.  I know that the entire piece is rotated as you pick up and knit each square in order, but the ABCD block seems to be in a different order in the two diagrams at the bottom of page 2.  Am I the only one who doesn't understand this?

Thank you for any help.

What does the abbrevation psso mean? I am confused by the instructions for row 2. Please help.

JoanA wrote re: Domino Knitting Potholder
on Wed, Sep 3 2008 5:06 PM

psso means "pass slipped stitch over". It's part of the directions for making a left-slanting decrease, the whole of which says "sl 1, ki, psso". Another way of writing/doing this decrease is "ssk", which means, "slip purlwise, slip purlwise, k the two stitches together". The effect just give the opposite slant to that of a k2tog decrease, which makes your work look more symmetrical. Also in larger pieces using these two decreases in a balanced arrangement helps the work not to develop a bias to one side.

JamieB wrote re: Domino Knitting Potholder

Ignore the panel, it is a mistake to have included that diagram as it has nothing to do with the potholder pattern.  However, it is good information that is illustrating ways to do panels with domino squares instead of the square 4 blocks. Learning how to use the basic squares and expand on them will give you the freedom to move on to other designs of your own.

I've never knitted squares like this. I got the first on ok but can't for the life of me figure out how to get the second on started.. If the 1st sq has 19 stitches how do you turn the 12 picked up stitches into (=25) won't that be bigger than the orginal 19 stitch sq? The basic sq also has 25 stitches. Am I just looking at something wrong?

AndreaJ wrote re: Domino Knitting Potholder

@ DianaC: You pick up your 12 stitches, and then cast on 13 more using the knitted cast on that's shown in the instructions. It'll make more sense once you do it the first time. :-)

BillS wrote re: Domino Knitting Potholder

Perhaps, given its modular nature, it doesn't matter much, but the diagrams are hopeless. As far as I can tell, the first diagram doesn't match the instructions; the fourth diagram matches the text. But turn the page, and all the rest of the diagrams show ABCD in a square -- different from the instuctions.

Confusing terminology, bad diagrams, text instructions that don't match most of the illustrations -- hmm. This pattern is not very well edited.

Why, the diagrams are confusing and the weaving in at the end made more difficult than necessary.  I think that once this pattern is reworked it will be fantastic, but for now I'll pass.

Something caught my eye in the postings about SSK being done purlwise, so I looked up the definition in "The Knitter's Handbook" by XRX books -- here is the verbatim text:

1. Slip 2 stitches separately to right needle, AS IF TO KNIT.

2. Slip left needle into these 2 stitches from left to right and knit them together: 2 stitches become 1.

The result is a left-slanting decrease.

The first few times you execute this technique it will feel very awkward -- after that you won't even notice you're doing it! I taught it a new knitter when I was teaching her how to knit socks using Magic Loop and she mastered it much more quickly than I did! (She's a much better knitter than me period!)

I think I'm going to try this by knitting two and then joining them with the attached I-cord...would be thick enough then to really work as a potholder or as a trivet.  I love that this will give me a way to use up some leftovers!

Sorry to add to the confusion - top of page 4, the basic squares - it says 'Here you have instructions for 9 different sqaures. The first is explained completely, the others are variations on the first. knit squares 1 and 2, plus one or two more...'  I can see the picture of all 9 squares, and of course the instructions for basic square 1, but I can find no reference to variations 2 - 9 - where are they? Or do we just have to have a go by looking at the picture?  This is a new technique to me, so I do need to get these practice sqaures right before stating on the potholder. MANy thnaks.

Have downloaded the rev. Domino patt.  Still have some problems:  first set of general information still says "Number of stitches:19"  Also, the yellow used for the diagrams is Most Difficult to read when printed out.  I'm being picky, maybe, but even a free pattern should be usable.

The revised instructions still leave something to be desired.  Square D shows stitches being picked up from squares C and B.  The instructions for square D say to cast on 12 stitches.

So--- My shorthand for the squares:

Square A - CO 25 stitches

Square B - Pick up 13 stitches and CO 12

Square C - CO 12 stitches and pick up 13

Square D - Pick up 25 stitches

All of the decreases slant in the same direction.

The rest of the squares E,F,G,H etc. follow the form above except the decrease slants are in a different direction.

All of the squares end the same unless you are using one color yarn for all and then you do not need to cut the yarn for Square A.

This is a wonderful way to use up the small bits of yarn left after knitting a pair of socks!  Truly a portable project using left over yarn.  Thanks!!!

Hi DianaC. I worked on this on the weekend and knit the basic square with 25 stitches cast on to try it. Then, I noticed that for the potholder, 19 stitches were require, but upon reading ahead, when you pick up and cast on stitches for square B, 25 stitches are the result. So, you must start with 25 stitches for square A just as Mary AnnB noted above. This worked fine and both A and B are the same size. I think the 19 stitches for the potholder is a typo and adds some confusion to the pattern. You would have to have the same number of stitches for all the squares.

Help! I have never done this technique before and am having problems with pattern. On first square when you do the 8 rows then do you complete the 8 rows again till 3 sts remain? Can you not make all squares then sew together? Or are you supposed to do square A and then pick up stitches plus CO and do B?

Thanks for the help!

LauraR wrote re: Domino Knitting Potholder
on Tue, Sep 16 2008 2:38 PM

For Nicole H: Knit Row 1 through 8 exactly as stated in the pattern for the Basic Square 1. You will notice that you are eliminating 3 stitches on the even rows. The odd numbered rows are always the same. "Continue in this manner until 3 stitches remain" means on the even rows, slip 1 knitwise,  knit2together and pass slip stitch over (psso) at the middle 3 stitches. Then on the odd rows continue as for Row 3. Don't forget to slip that first stitch!

Don't read too far ahead. Once you have the 1st square completed, you will find it easy to pick up the stitches and cast on for square B. Don't even think about sewing them all together!

I've completed the Square A, B, C and D in Bernat Handicrafter Cotton using 25 stitches and it measures 5" square!  I'm going to put the I-cord trim on just that and start over with 19 stitches and figure out the pick up and casting on for 19 stitches.

I agree it's way too soon to set expiration for the download. Especially for CORRECTIONS. I downloaded the original but just noticed there was a corrected version only to find out I had to purchase it. We've had power outages here in Ohio since last weekend & of course that means NO COMPUTER access. I guess I'll just muddle through the suggestions from everyone - thanks.
