Inspired by a machine-knit scarf decorated with random clusters of bobbles (formed by gathering bits of the knitted fabric with elastic thread), Ann Budd set out to handknit a scarf with a similar look. The “bobbles” here are actually 4/4 cables in which the stitches are twisted one complete clockwise rotation before being worked . Worked against a background of 1/1 rib, the piece boasts an appealing drape and is totally reversible!

Finished Size: About 8 1⁄2" (21.5 cm) wide and 56" (142 cm) long.

Yarn: Louet Gems Merino Yarn (100% wool; 225 yd [205 m]/100 g): #80 fern green, 3 skeins.

Needles: Size 7 (4.5 mm). Adjust needle size if necessary to obtain the correct gauge.

Notions: Two cable needles (cn); tapestry needle.

Gauge: 36 sts and 27 rows = 4" (10 cm) in pattern stitch.

Skill level: Intermediate.

We do need to have a goog photo of the scarf, but this one took too much ink when I printed it!

I've seen a bobble scarf and liked it a lot but could not figure out how to make the bobbles look correct.  Thanks much for this pattern; I'm ready for it.

Grrr! I went clear through the survey, and I'm properly signed in, but the pattern will not download for me. This is a first for me, and it's definitely annoying. Wish I'd thought to grumble about this system on the survey. :o*

I am so excited to see this pattern.  Can't wait to knit it, think it may go to my mom, who enjoys getting my hand knitted items.  Thanks.

I can't get a good idea of what the project looks like because the photo obscures the pattern/design.

Photo is toooo small to really _see_ the project. No matter how free, if I can't see it, I won't DL it.

Thank you for this pattern. It sounds beautiful but can't really tell from the photo--first thought it was some kind of neck/shoulder shawl.  But the description cleared that up.  I like trying new things and this will be fun.

MarilynL wrote re: Bobble Scarf

I didn't print the picture because of the amount of ink it takes.  Would like to see patterns like this laid out instead of on a model and maybe a small picture of it.

Maryjvss wrote re: Bobble Scarf

Perhaps I missed it on the survey but then again, perhaps it was not asked:  I would appreciate better photos of the knitting prokects with the capacity to enlarge the pictures to get a better idea of the project.

Carol wrote re: Bobble Scarf

Despite the title, I too first thought this was some kind of shawl - the way it's draped in the photo hides the edges well enough to make the actual shape difficult to distinguish.  Another photo, or just a different photo, would have helped. I like the look of this, as best I can tell, and hope to make time to try it.

On the page of the 'faux bobble', the botton has the symbol and says "twisted 4/4 ribbed cable (see box below)" -- the pdf-file I have does NOT have a box below to view -- thus, I am not sure exactly how the 'twist' works.  Please help as I'd love to make this for my mom.  Thanks!

JoyB wrote re: Bobble Scarf

I also thought it was a shawl. Great idea to have larger photos or a "click to enlarge" button. Also multiple views would be good to. Thanks for another lovely pattern, this should work up quickly.

For those who wanted a bigger photo, if you choose " download"  , the picture there is very big and clearly shows the pattern. And yes, I can see why this would take a huge amount of ink. Anyway, it is a great looking scarf.

BarbaraPenn@worldnet.att.net wrote re: Bobble Scarf

I forgot to put on my survey that front AND back views of patterns would be appreciated very much.  Also dark-colored yarn makes the stitch pattern hard to see.  Thank you for offering this free pattern but I don't really care for it. It would have been helpful to see a photo of the model wearing it a different way--more like a scarf, than a shawl maybe.

I haven't downloaded any patterns recently but might like to try this one.  As an overseas member of knitting daily, we don't have skeins of yarn over here. We buy yarn in 25 gm, 50 gm. 100 gm and 200 gm balls.   What is a skein's equivalent?

Once you download this pattern, a lovely full screen picture will be quite clear showing edges & bobbles nicely.  To print picture without taking too much ink, set printer to 'draft' mode, for the pic. only. It will print a light,  CLEAR, DRY picture, quickly!  :-)

M. wrote re: Bobble Scarf

Nice cozy looking photo shot for marketing the yarn... but it doesn't really show what the scarf looks like. I too thought it was a shawl at first glance, or is it supposed to look like a bib? The pattern photo shot is BIG and my printer doesn't offer draft mode options so I doubt I'll ever print that page out. Stitch number references added to the bottom of the chart would be nice... am I being too picky about a free pattern?

CassandraW wrote re: Bobble Scarf

I think it is a great picture and pattern, it is free.  I think I have yarn that will work so I am off to get it ready.

I'm with the others who want a really good picture.  A 'fashion shot' is fine but I want to see the garment, in good detail, before I bother getting it.  I don't mean such incredibly good detail that I don't need the pattern anymore - but good enough that I can appreciate what the pattern has to offer.  Regs... Everyone is entitled to their own opinions, absolutely without doubt. On this blog I was dissed a while ago for saying I didn't like something in a gallery :(    ... BUT you don't look a gift horse in the mouth, smile nicely and say thank you very much...you may just really love the next one!

The ladies who are having trouble downloading the .pdf files might like to try clicking on "Help" in their Adobe Reader file menues and seeing if they have the latest version of the programme.  There has been a very recent update which once downloaded, might solve their problem.

Thanks for the beautiful pattern.  I wonder if you can include more of a description of the yarn used in patterns.  Or possibly a link to a website.  Since I go to my stash first, I am constantly searching the web for  the specified yarn so I can see if I have something to substitute.

This yarn comes in five weights ranging from fingering to chunky - not sure which was intended in this pattern?
