This springy scarf is modeled after one featured in Volume 6 of Weldon’s Practical Needlework (Facsimile reproduction, Loveland, Colorado: Interweave Press, 2002). The original was worked in fingering-weight wool in two sections, each worked downward from the center back neck. I knitted this version in a DK-weight alpaca from one end to the other, eliminating the bulky join at the center neck. A few rows of eyelets followed by a fancy crochet edging widen the ends of the scarf and add a lacy touch to the sturdy ribbed pattern.

Handspun Version Included

Finished Size: About 4¼ inches (11 cm) wide and 49 inches (125 cm) long

Yarn: Alpaca with a Twist Baby Twist (DK-weight), 100% baby alpaca yarn, 110 yards (100 m)/50 g ball, 3 balls of #4004 green

Needles: Two size 8 (5 mm)

Notions: Crochet hook, size I/9 (5.5 mm), Tapestry needle

Gauge: About 19 sts and 12 rows = 2 inches (5 cm) in textured rib pattern, relaxed; 10 sts and 14 rows = 2 inches (5 cm) in stockinette stitch on size 8 (5 mm) needles; obtaining exact gauge is not critical for this project

I have many scarf patterns, but I definitely like this one.  I'll probably end up making several for my granddaughters, but I'll have to adjust the length for the younger ones.  Thanks for the free pattern. : )

Hi...I'm in the same boat about the PDF.  I tried it with Acrobat Reader 7.0 and Adobe Acrobat Pro 6.0 with no luck.  It says the file was damaged because of improper decoding and now can't be opened.

Please re-post and I'll check back again.  Thanks!

I'm taking a little road trip this weekend with my daughter.  We know of a wonderful yarn shop and I think the yarn for this scarf would be a great souvenir.  :)

This is such a great pattern, so feminine! Right now, I'm knitting a man's scarf using this very same soft yarn, Alpaca with a Twist Baby Twist in a nice dark grey. This will be a lot of fun to make as well. Thanks!

I have been wanting a scarf pattern with a ruffle for a couple of years!!!  YEA!!  I'm going to shorten it & add a button hole slit so I can slide one end through the other.  I think it will be very cute!!    Thank you

Okay, I need some advice. I have downloaded a number of patterns over the past year or so with no problem. I'm obviously logged in or I couldn't post here at the forum. My pdf reader is up to date - as in I just reinstalled it to be sure. However, I've not been able to download the last two patterns. Nor can I find a direct email addy to contact someone at Knitting Daily directly to ask for help. Anyone have an email address or phone number I can use to get advice? Thanks!

What a beauty! I'm inspired to spin up my new alpaca's fleece so I can knit it!

We have 2 alpacas, Charlie Brown & Ginger Meggs. Ginger is a baby we are hand rearing.... mother died of a snake bite ... so sad. Charlie had his first shear and the fleece is fine & soft & luxurious!

Fabulous pattern! Thank you

I just d/l this beautiful scarf.  Can't wait to start, but my question is this:  The pattern comes up stating Handspun Version.  Is there not also supposed to be a version using yarn shop yarn, not handspun?

Thanks for an answer.

I don't wear scarves much, but this would make such a lovely neck warmer. All I'd have to do is shorten it a lot and add buttonholes. Cool!

Lovely scarf. Thank you for the pattern. I'm rustic with the crochet but definitly worth trying again for this scarf.  The scallop edge balances the hard lines of the ribbing and soften it nicely. This scarf makes a great Christmas gift.

When I saw this, I just had to cast on RIGHT NOW.  I'm glad I did.  I'm about 40 inches into it using Brown Sheep Cotton Fleece in a gray color with a light lavender cast to it.  Beautiful!  This works up really quickly, and I'm enjoying knitting it.  This one is for my day care provider for Christmas.  I may have to make one for myself!  Denise
