Attention Lace Knitters! You Could Win Miriam Felton's Book, Yarn, and Needles

Feb 23, 2011

Attention Lace Knitters! On episode 604 of Knitting Daily TV, Shay Pendray visits with new author Miriam Felton about her first book, Twist and Knit. Full of uniquely classical lace patterns, this project book is perfect for your special skeins of yarn. From traditional stoles to fun mitts and socks, the small scale projects in Miriam's book echo great knitted lace techniques.

Yes, Miriam is a lace knitting expert, and on her designer spotlight segment with Shay, she demonstrates some quick fixes for common mistakes in lace knitting, such as how to fix a wrongly crossed lace stitch pattern.

Watch Miriam's Designer Spotlight, on episode 604:

If you're intrigued with lace knitting, or you're an expert like Miriam, you can download her free pattern for the Polyphylla Cowl seen on this segment. A fun project that you can carry with you this spring, this cowl adds a bit of style to any cardigan, lightweight jacket, or pullover sweater. And when the weather cools down, it would look cute and feminine with a classic wool coat.

What lace projects have you been working on? Are you casting on for a traditional lace shawl? Or, being adventurous and adding lace stitches to projects in unexpected ways? Try knitting lace cuffs on your next sweater, add a lace edging to a cloche hat.

We want to hear from you about innovative and traditional lace projects you've knitted or are knitting. Leave a comment on this blog and you'll automatically be entered to win a copy of Miriam's Twist and Knit book, knitting needles, and yarn for your next lace project! It's a lace knitter's gift basket, and the perfect excuse to continue your lace knitting.

Thank you to Miriam Felton for donating her book to one lucky winner, and thank you to WEBS, America's Yarn Store, for donating needles and yarn. We'll randomly choose a winner next week, so be sure to share your comments soon. A winner will be randomly selected from all the comments on Thursday, March 3, 2011, at 9am Mountain Time. Good luck!

I'm going to make this Polyphylla Cowl. LI've discovered that I llike to wear cowls more than scarves and I've wanted one that was wider at the bottom to go over my shoulders. Can't wait to start.

I've only knit one lace project - a wedding garter for an in-law nephew's fiance. It was a challenge. After recovering for a few years, I fell in love with a lace scarf at Stitches West last month from Wagtail Yarns out of Australia:  Butterfly Scarf by Branka Medlock in 2 ply kid mohair. I want to make it for my mom, but I'm shaking in my boots.

Well with this number of comments it is unlikely that I will win but it is worth a try! I l.o.v.e. knitting lace. It is the challenge I think and the results are fantastic!! I have given many lace wraps/stoles/shawls as gifts, but keep many for myself. I dress up an outfit, erase a chill, or just feel glamorous!!

Enjoy your knitting, that is what I say!

Thank you so much for the encouragement. It's true that knitting lace has its frustrations and rewards. I just tore up a lace triangle shawl that was nearly completed and started an entirely different piece, the wedding stole from "Knit One, Bead Too", because the triangle shawl just wasn't up to my standards. Turned out I made the most basic mistake of all -- using the wrong yarn. Instructions called for lace-weight yarn, and that's what I was using, but the yarn was too fine. I ended with a sloppy mess full of gaping holes. I should have put a lot more effort into testing and figuring how the swatch would translate in a completed project. Oh, well. The wedding stole is working beautifully in the same yarn, so I feel I made the right decision.

Lace is when your work has INTENTIONAL holes in it, right? (I did some unintentional lacework in my early knitting years by not moving the yarn forward or backward when I should have.)

I'm making a baby blanket now with lace diamonds in it, and would love a chance to make something utterly decadent. Thanks for offering such a great gift!

I've knitted just one lace project, a Shetland Triangle for my MIL.  I'm hooked. I have about a half dozen lace shawls that I want to knit for myself.  But, I need to knit a lace shawl for my sisters wedding first.  It's funny, I'm not really a lace kinds of gal.  If you had told me that I would be in love with knitting lace a couple of years ago, I would have told that you were crazy.

I have made several lace shawls of which I only have one.  I have used 100% alpaca in a soft grey to make one that is longer and wider than a traditional shawl that I used briefly as a winter evening wrap and even took it to China instead of a coat. But it now is in the bay area of CA with my childhood friend who fell in love with it on my visit on the way back from China.  Sigh ... I miss that shawl but it has just the best home where it is used more as a throw than a shawl.  It was in feather and fan pattern.

I also did two similar ones as gifts and the one I own is in black louet linen which doesn't get as much use and it should, but it is OK.

I love the cowl pattern and my fingers are itching to try it.  I am a lace addict and just keep collecting more and more books of lace patterns for my personal library.

The reason I'm a knitter is because of lace.  I saw an Estonian lace shawl belonging to my Grandmother when I was seven and convinced my mother to teach me to knit right away because I wanted to be able to make something as graceful and delicate myself someday.  My most recent project is a lace shawl with a mohair yarn for the center and silk for the borders and have now started knitting the lace for my wedding dress with 00000000 needles.  My fiance thinks they're scary because they are long and sharp, but I told him the lace will be worth it.

I just finished a stole based on the Woodland Shawl (Nikol Lohr) out of Mini Mochi.  It was a fun, pretty simple project, and the colors I used remind me of being in a forest!

I usually have a lace project going at the same time as a sweater project.  I like knitting lace to see the pattern develop and the geeky part of me likes the challenge of "figuring out" how the pattern works and memorizing the repeats.  Definitely one of the more artsy ways to have fun with numbers!

I must admit that after 35 years of knitting I knit very little lace. I think I tend to shy away from things that are "too Girly" and only recently see that a lace pattern doesn't have to be frilly and delicate. That's why I really like interweave knitting patters that help me break out of this mindset. I also admit that I have more trouble seeing a lace pattern than even a 24 row complex cable pattern. So any tips you can give make lace more fun would be great !!

I had found a square Shetland shawl pattern on the antique patterns yahoo group. The book was almost 100 years old and the book said the shawl pattern was 100 years old. So for my first ever lace item, I used the pattern from the central square to create a lace stole and presented it to a young friend. It felt as if I were passing on history. I knit my first lace scarf last summer. I really enjoy knitting lace patterns - as I am not with my "social knitting" group. If that occurs, I tend to mess up my pattern and have to "un-knit". That is until I grew a brain - I now use a lifeline every few rows. Now if I could only remember to actually write down the row numbers I use the lifeline on. Oh well, lace knitting isn't supposed to be boring, now, is it?

I am hoping to be able to design a lace shawl or sweater sometime in the future.

Hello fellow lace knitters,

my latest larger project was "Madli" by Nancy Bush, which was great fun to knit. I was in a little hurry doing it as my daughter wanted to take it to Bordeaux, France, with her. She went there ten days ago on a diplomatic mission which will last until octobre. The colour I used very much resembles te original. For relaxation the present shawls are less lacy but more lazy. My next timeconsuming project will be aka (nightsongs) in a sort of green. I expect to receive it in about ten days time. so, enjoy knitting and so long from Hamburg, Germany

My only lace project was a travelers shawl that I knitted for my ailing mother who saw it on her last day when I finished it. I believe that she took it with her in spirit, so since that shawl still belongs to her I am now ready to move on and make something special for me now, I'm sure this book would help me in the process.

I have two lace scarves on my needles.  One is a simple 4 row repeat knit in sock weight yarn and the other is a kit from Morehouse in two colors of their lace weight.  The first is my "car" project: something simple and small that I keep in my car for those times I have to deal with waiting (for kids, an appointment, etc.).  The other I work on when I have at least half an hour and good lighting.

I have done lace shawls.  You ask what inspires me -- I guess the pattern and the fiber, some patterns just say knit me and other don't.  Currently I am working on a cowl using Jade Sapphire's Mink in a lace pattern called Baby Fern Stitch that I found in an older stitch pattern book lent to me by a friend.

What a great giveaway!  The lace knitting projects that inspire me are the elaborate pictorial ones that depict, say, a peacock in loads of detail.  Innovative ideas?  Hmm ... Perhaps repurposing older (Victorian) filet crochet patterns as the basis for lace work might qualify.  I've primarily done smaller lace items like scarves, but now I'm working on a larger rectangular stole and thoroughly enjoying it, both process and product.

I also did the Flower Basket Lace Shawl & Scarf (S-2014) by Evelyn A. Clark. It's just mor fun than just plain old garter or stockinette stitch. Lace is fun, and can be complicated or easy (and with the bonus of still looking complicated!)  I agree with another reader who is in love with the feather and fan pattern.  I made a shawl using that pattern last year for a friend who is always cold, and whose father was in the hospital dying.  When I got an amazing deal on cotton yarn three years ago -- which started another cycle (which I don't think is going to end this time around) of knitting for me, I learned many lace patterns making washcloths.  The most recent lace pattern I knitted was a drop-stitch scarf made from yarn I dyed with Kool-Aid.  I was really pleased with how pretty it looked.

My first lace project was a poncho done on size 13 needles with another sparkly yarn.  I really enjoyed it and have done a couple of shawlettes on sock yarn to prepare myself for the lighter weight of the Nightsongs shawl.  I love the feel of lace weight yarn and have actually used it in making chemo hats our group donates.  I have even gotten the group to use it using two or three strands at a time.  They have always liked the end results. I am looking forward to this book and will get it one way or another.

I've been getting into lace more and more, and recently got myself some great blocking wires and mats. What a difference they make!

I'm currently working on a lace baby blanket for my sister-in-law's baby-to-be. It's the Cellular Blanket in Erika Knight's Natural Nursery Knits.

The other lace WIP I'm working on (for myself) is the Sumptuously Soft scarf in Linda Romens's Odd Ball Knitting. It's my first project with novelty yarn; I'm using a dreamy soft acrylic-nylon yarn that's fuzzy and lovely and strange (and discontinued, but I bought enough that I think I'll have a spare ball, so I might later use it for the trim on a Santa hat later in the year!).

I recently got obsessed with cowls too, so the gift of the Polyphylla cowl pattern is a great surprise (thank you!). My most recent one (a couple of weeks ago) is Dina Smith's Cozy Cowl.

Yay, lace!  :)

Over the years I've made many Feather & Fan blankets, but only recently did it occur to me that F&F is lace!  I've done a lot of crocheted lace (shawls, curtains, edgings), but it was only a few years ago that I tried knitting with laceweight yarn--and Miriam Felton's Icarus shawl was my first project.  Now I always have at least one lace project on the needles and have made lace scarves, shawlettes, shawls, stoles, and cowls.  Often they are gifts for others, but I've kept a few for myself and wear them all the time.  So...thanks, Mim, for getting me started on this beautiful obsession, and congratulations on your first book!  I love your work.

Thank you for the cowl pattern and for offering the giveaway.  I think the film segment of correcting a lace error would have been better if the camerman or camerwoman, followed the knitter from the "back" (by standing in the back of the knitter) so the work would be facing us-the way we knit.  You would also be able to see the stitches and the technique close up as Miriam corrected the ladder.  Close ups of techniques really help in a video, otherwise most of the segment ends up mostly in conversation not enabling us to carry out the technique!

The second is a popover top  that I am adapting....it begins with a small lace edging that flows into a completely random lace body and sleeves. The third is a small scarf that is so random that the edges are wavy.

I have been knitting lace for a long time, and I can't believe that I resisted using charts. Understanding how the charts work has made the transfer to random lace feel so liberating!

I'm a devotee of Barbara Walker's stitch pattern books, and also a hand-spinner, and also a Bernese Mountain dog owner. Put those all together: a scarf using two lace patterns, made of handspun BMD fibre. Wish I could attach the photo! The scarf was auctioned off at a charity fund-raiser.

When I began, knitting projects fell into three categories - plain (garter & stocking stitch), patterned ( fancy combinations of knit/purl) and fair isle (used to loosely describe a pattern with more than one colour). Small lacy projects with beautifully soft wool are a joy to do today after a long hiatus from knitting;  the cowl will come after the current scarf that I am doing to match an already completed hat.

I knit a shawl in 2 halves to make the lace motif end in the same way at the shawl edges.  There was a sort of angled leaf shape in the motif, and I used that motif in a vertical strip to connect the 2 halves - it came out beautifully!  See:

I love lace, my first ever effort was the Branching Out scarf from knitty, and my very favourite designs are the elegant 'pictorial' designs from Birgit Freyer. I drape my shawls on chairs, dressers and beds and make sure I wear each in turn, even just around the house, so it doesn't get jealous--I mean, dusty!

My next major lace project will either be a wedding stole for my youngest daughter in Estonian lace (don't tell her, I'll have to hide it in the camphor chest for a few years, but at least I'll know it's done!) or the Cherry Blossom shawl, which I have been contemplating for a couple of years now. Finally I feel that I've learned enough to tackle it!

I am relatively new to lace knitting but thoroughly enjoy it. My most recent project involves knitting a lace rectangle (short scarf) then a cotton broach. If you lift one side of the short scarf to the other and then pin with the broach opening up the lace pattern this drapes nicely.

On the needles right now are Revonluti, Anisette (frogged a couple times), and Wisp (really, size 8!), and waiting in the wings... Haruni (can't decide on yarn) and Nancy Bush's Lily of the Valley (yarn chosen).  Seriously, I need more time to knit! Send help!!  Please :D

I love knitting lace and have 2-3 projects going at the moment. My problem with lace is I can't knit lace with distractions so this limits my lace knitting time. When the weather is warm my favorite place to knit, especially lace, is the back deck that overlooks the woods and fields behind our home. The birds and wildlife are an inspiration and wonderful company.

I have a little lace experience, as evidenced by a half finished scarf from an advent knit along. I plan on picking it up again as soon as I finish some other things I have on needles. The bright red lace will be a cheery (though involved) way to knit through the gray of March.

Also, I plan on making a lace sampler from some old Victorian needle craft books in the public domain. The language and lack of pictures will make it difficult, but there are so many sources of help online and I've been really interested in the Victorian era as of late.

Thanks for the contest! Good luck to all!

My favorite thing about knitting lace is when the pattern just *clicks* with you and all of the directional decreases start to make a cohesive picture. I'm itching to cast on my next lace project, but having trouble choosing from all of the lovely patterns that I'm finding!

The book that got me interested in learning to do lace was "Victorian Lace Today."  From it, I learned so much--it made me a braver, more experienced knitter.  I then went through an Estonian Lace phase, gobbling up anything Nancy Bush translated.  I still don't like making nupps though!   I have also made several of Miriam Felton's and Anne Hanson's designs---they are my favorite pattern writers.   Most recently I have loved Margaret Stoves' new book, "Wrapped in Lace."  While on the surface her work looks traditional, I love how she has incorporated.new motifs that reflect the culture of her country.

I just finished knitting "Forest Canopy" by Susan Lawrence - but I was low on yardage since I was using handspun. In order to make sure it would be wide enough to be practical to wear, I made it into a shallower, wider shawl by working increases on each end of the wrong-side rows. I had to work the extra stitches into the lace pattern, but it turned out really well, and the gentle crescent/U-shape helps it stay put on my shoulders.
