A Knitting Wrapsody's Summit American Yak Wrap and a Chance to Win Bijou Basin Ranch Yarn!

Mar 2, 2011

We're revisiting series 500 today on Tuned In To Knitting Daily TV, focusing on Kristin's very own design from her new book A Knitting Wrapsody, the Summit American Yak Wrap featured in episode 513. A knitted wrap with a unique reversible lace stitch pattern, you can knit along with Kristin and download the free pattern for this wrap here.

Watch Kristin demonstrate the Summit American Yak Wrap on episode 513's How To segment:

Here's Kristin to talk about the wrap, her latest book, and it's unique yarn from Bijou Basin Ranch:

A Knitting Wrapsody
is a collection of knit patterns that are inspired by a variety of different crafts, including crochet, embroidery, weaving, painting, and even fishing.

The Summit cardi-wrap is made of thin strips of a reversible lace stitch pattern. What is interesting about this stitch pattern is that although it is reversible, it still has a right and wrong side. What makes it reversible is the fact that the repeat is 7 rows. Because the repeat has an odd number of rows, the right side will face one way on the first repeat, but face the opposite direction on the second repeat. The right side will face opposite every other repeat. The strips begin with an extremely loose cast on and end with a similar stretchy bind off. Each one uses yarn overs, which is done by design for the next step. The strips are joined together by picking up and knitting through 2 strips at the same time, and then bound off on a return row. This technique, along with a contrast yarn, gives a pretty “piped” textured edge to the fabric. Because of the special cast on and bind off techniques in the strips, we have perfectly spaced holes to use for picking up stitches for the joining technique. (The video above really demonstrates this well.)

The cardi-wrap is rectangular with sleeve openings so you can wear it in a variety of ways. Check out the video below, on location in Bijou Basin Ranch’s booth at TNNA Long Beach 2011, as I demonstrate how to wear it in a few ways.

I featured one of my favorite Bijou Basin Ranch yarns in A Knitting Wrapsody: Bijou Bliss. It is a 50/50 blend of American Yak and Cormo Wool. It is soft and lofty, and only gets softer with wear. Summit Wrap features the 2 naturally occurring colors of Bliss (cream and heathered brown). Now you can order Bijou Bliss in brilliant jewel tones hand dyed by Lorna’s Laces. Blush (the hot pink variety) is my favorite! I designed a few upcoming projects with this color. I’ll tell you more when the projects debut!

We want you to try Bijou Basin Ranch's lovely supply of yarn if you haven't already, so we're offering one lucky winner a dream supply of their yarn simply by telling us what you'd knit with the yarn if you won. Comment on this blog and let us know if you're going to tackle the Summit American Yak Wrap or another design, possibly from Kristin's A Knitting Wrapsody or a design that's been on your to-knit list for awhile. We'll randomly pick a winner next week Wednesday at noon Mountain Time, so be sure to comment before then for your chance to win the yarn pictured here!

The yarns that are being given to one lucky winner are:
Bijou Spun Himalayan Trail (75% yak down; 25% super fine merino) – 2 hanks, or 400 yards
Bijou Spun Mountain Treks (50% yak down; 50% alpaca) – 1 hank, or 250 yards
Bijou Spun Tibetan Dream (85% pure yak down; 15% nylon) – 2 hanks, 800 yards
Bijou Spun Fingering Weight (100% yak down) – 3 hanks, 300 yards
Bijou Spun Lhasa Wilderness (75% yak down, 25% bamboo) – 1 hank, 180 yards

Special thanks to Bijou Basin Ranch for this great collection of yarn! If you're interested in learning more about Bijou Basin Ranch and their yarns, visit their website here.

I would love to try this yarn. I have been wanting to try buffalo yarn for awhile but it is out of my price range. I would make myself either a sweater or a scarf. Something in a lace pattern that would make the colors sparkle.

I'm not sure what I'd make out of this yarn since I've never seen or heard  it.  From the description it sounds great and I'd like a chance to try it out.  I'm a fairly new knitter but find it relaxing.  I love makeing  wraps, hats, and gloves that I can give away to someone needing a outward expresion that someone cares.

Even w/o touching it, I can tell that this yarn would be very soft... I am looking forward to seeing Kristin's Wrapsody book and I would knit either the wrap shown here or a pattern from her book. Kristin's book seems to show new & creative designs for wraps that can appeal to all ages and styles.

If I ever had a dream supply of  Bijou Basin Ranch  yak & Cormo yarn I would love to knit myself the Hampton Cardigan. This pattern is by Cecily Glowik MacDonald. Being a plus size person (requires 9 skeins) I definitely NEED a dream supply. The pattern is in "New England Knits: Timeless Knitwear with a Modern Twist by Cecily MacDonald and Melissa LaBarre". I can only DREAM.

the wrap technique interests me for use in both a shawl and "lap wrap".  I've a friend only now recovering from a near death walking pneumonia experience.  She is undergoing kidney dialysis 3 times weekly and I have wanted to make something uniquely hers that is warm yet light weight, uniquely textured and visually appealing.  I've found the pattern.  So, should I win the prize - hurray!!! Should I not, I still feel a winner - I've the inspiration and direction I sought to begin.  Now to see if there is a source for your yarn in the Portland OR area.

What scrumptious yarn! - If I won it I would definitely do the Summit American Yak Wrap pattern, but adapted as a baby blanket, for my scrumptious baby girl, who's 1 - she would love the texture and especially the beautiful edging, and as she's (definitely) the last of my 5 children, I can think of nothing more wonderful than wrapping her up in this yummy Bijou Basin Ranch yarn! If I had enough I would do blankets for each of my 3 daughters and hats for my 2 sons, and a shawl for me!

I attended Stitches 2011 and found this booth, there were couches, different yarns and textures on different needles displayed in plastic champagne glasses.  We were encouraged to sit, relax and try out these yarns.  I was lucky enough to grab an amazing beautiful greenish/khaki color (not sure the name of the yarn but remembered it was Yak and Alpaca) and knit a few rows with a pair of Signature circular needles.  Ahhh, the yarn felt soft and velvety in my hands!  I had to track down the booth and grabbed myself a pin -- I Love Yaks!

If there was a lady in my life at present I'd get yarn to make Ms. Omdahl's lovely wrap. Excellent modular design!

Since there is no lady, I'd make the man's cabled scarf  featured in the Spring 2009 issue, p.98 or so, adding a cable or two to the center for the finer Bijou Basin Ranch yarns. (I like a fairly wide scarf.) The prize package yarns are mixed blends and weights so I'd try to find small projects to match each quantity. Whichever one I like best, I'd then buy yarn for a nice classic cardigan, maybe adding some intarsia detailing.

BTW there's such a thing as a girlfriend/fiance/wife sweater, so if the random selection should come up with me I hope you don't discard it and try again! I would love to work with this yarn and I am good enough. I'd send you photos to show it!

Fingering weight: socks of course... if this would be good for socks. Otherwise, maybe a headband for skiing?

A long lace scarf of the merino mix.

Alpaca? oooohhh mittens, maybe colorwork with some other yarns?

Bamboo mix? Maybe a hat but, then again if I like it, maybe buy more and make a sweater!

Such possibilities!!

With my skeins of fluffy yak,

I’d knit a scarf for Grandpa Jack,

yak socks for toes as warm as toast,

and a fine, fine shawl of which I’d boast.

But if, alas, I do not win

I will not hit my stash of gin.

Instead my stash of yarn I’ll seek

and stay home knitting for a week.

just got my book and dvd by Kristin Omdahl - "knitting wrapsody"  and i love the American Yak Wrap i hope to win your contest because the yarn looks beautiful  i wanted to tell you about her book and my experiences --  especially the knitted skirts which look deceptively easy.  i really want to try the Tree of Life Ruana even though i've never done pleats before.  Kristin's dvd makes pleats look deceptively easy.  i've found knitted pleat videos on you tube!  The video you have on your blog now is on the dvd that came with the book there are many easy projects in the book as well as challenging ones....the motif in the Lelani Wrap looks like hairpin lace technique i was hoping i can use hairpin lace instead of knitting the motifs i learned about hairpin lace in Kristin Omdahls' other book "Crochet so Fine".  So i've been looking at videos' all over the web on that as well. Since Omdahl uses crochet style conversion to knitting i think the blending of the two in the Lelani wrap will be great!!  Last but not least if I can say one thing i must make besides the American Yak wrap it is the "Infinity" Cardi wrap with sleeves because the technique on the trim and the sleeves looks like crochet but it's knit and the "Nerina" ruched ruffled scarf are beautiful.  i must also make the "I do" diamond lace scarf and the "Lucky clover" scarf.  i can see weeks and hours of work ahead of me so i better get started!!!! thanks Kristin and Knitting Daily TV for your fantastic Videos on YOutube.com as well as your great books.

And Lhasa I'd have to buy 4 more balls so I could make the Wrap Front Shrug from  Bijou Basin that I *love*.

It's too extravagant to keep it all to myself.

I have all ready used Bijou Basin yarn to knit the two color cabled hat that was in Fon's and Porter magazine. The yarn worked up beutifully. The color contrast was good and I have received many compliments on the hat. I am wanting to make a matching scarf and mittens. I think it would be avery striking ensemble. With the lace weight yarn I think a reversible wrap or a lace shawl would be nice. Actualy I think any of the yarn would be wonderful to work with.  Carol Baskett

It took me 40 years to finally try knitting and 3 months in, I'm in deep! If you can believe this, I thought fingerless gloves would be an easy, first project. I bought a pair of bamboo DPN's and then realized I needed 3 more to do the diamond cable. So, rather than leave my house on Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving 2010, I used 6 grades of sandpaper and made 3 needles from bamboo skewers from Smart & Final. They work beautifully because I made them only 5" long, which is perfect for working in the round on a glove!

So, I had to crack the code of the downloaded pattern (what's "T3F" and "pfkb?!).  A new friend I made while hiking the Grand Canyon explained a few things, like what a PM (place marker)…and that I was starting on a project that is not for beginners. Well, if I am challenged, I pursue with a vengeance.

I've since knitted 5 pairs in different merino wools as gifts by request. I got bored, so I played one night with "kfb" and "pfkb" and doing my  own mathematic expansion patterns, knitting a Stevie Nicks-type lace extension out of mohair on a pair of gloves. It flairs out and ruffles! You can't help but feel like a happy girl when you wear them. They long but stop to let you show off your manicure. For a loose, lacy effect, I made 5 DPN's out of fatter bamboo chopsticks. Hey, if skewers work, I figured good ohashi (japanese for chopsticks) would work, too.

If I got my hands on some Bisou Basin Ranch yak yarn, I'd try my hand at designing a short, stylish, open pattern sweater to replace my missing Anthropologie sweater…but I'd do it my way, however that evolves!

The first things that I thought of would have to be woolly mittens and felted clogs. I hate cold fingers and toes.

Oh, geez.  Decisions, decisions.  Kristin's work is so beautiful, but I love some of Anne KuoLukito's designs for Bijou too.  I guess if I win, I can decide then!

Wow - what a great giveaway!  I've been itching to get my hands on some of this yarn.  I have no idea what I would make - I'd probably just spend my time petting it.

I'm really liking the Tide Pool Spiral Lace Shawl from A Knitting Wrapsody.  How awesome would that feel in Bijou Basin?!  I hope I win!

Have just joined your website and would LOVE to win the wool!

If I were lucky enough to win, the items I would make would be the cardi-wrap, a knee length skirt , a warm hat and matching fingerless mitts.

Due to medication I have very thin blood and these items would ensure I stay lovely and warm!

Good Luck to all who enter!

Great Giveaway!  I would most definitely eek out at least one, if not two shawls, a pair of mittens and stash the rest for frequent petting ;-)

I have been longing to try the bijou Basin! And there are so many fabulous patterns in A knitting wrapsody it would be hard to choose. I think my favorite is the Echo Reversible Drop-Stitch Mobius.

Oooh, lovely yarns.  Yaks are fascinating to see with their long haired coats.  I have seen them in the wild in Outer Mongolia on a trip I took there a few years ago.  It would be wonderful to try this yarn.  I believe I would make a lovely warm tam hat.  I love to design so this would be a wonderful experience to try a new fiber.  Thanks.

Oh I would probably make a shawl or scarf.  Something that I could definately wear close to my skin.  I have not tried their yarns, but I would LOVE to.

The yarn looks scrumptious.  I would knit some sort of cozy wrap with it.

Definitely would make the Summit Wrap if I won (and probably will even if I don't!), and maybe also whip something up from Crochet So Fine. Gorgeous patterns + gorgeous yarn = so much WIN!

Hmm, I think that yarn is begging me to be turned into an infinity scarf or oversized cowl; that's what I'd make if I won. Yum!

Have not knit with yak yarns and would love the opportunity to knit with Bijou Basin Ranch yarns.  Think I would start by making a wrap/shawl that could be worn and enjoyed in more seasons in my Southern state.

I have one of their patterns (the Wrap Front Shrug), but I haven't gotten the yarn for it yet... so this would be perfect!

I love this wrap. Kristin's book is also on my wishlist! Yak is something that I have yet to work with, but from the details in the video, it's something that is on my list to now try!

I have loved this yarn from afar for a long time.  I would be willing to learn how to make cables with this yarn.  :-)  Scarf, hat and mittens would be perfect.  A set for me and one for my daughter in college at UMass.

I've seen your yarns in person several times and covet them dearly; thanks for sharing such an interesting pattern! I love that it has holes for your arms. I tend to stay away from wraps because they're always falling off while I'm bustling about.

I'd work up a fair  isle sweater, and a scarf/hat/mitts set. Those colors are wonderful, and the yarn ssounds super-luxurious.
