Win Yak Yarn from Bijou Basin Ranch to Make Your Own Entwined Cabled Hat!

Feb 27, 2012

Welcome to another Tuned In To Knitting Daily TV blog giveaway, in celebration of our 100th episode season!

This week we're giving away 3 hat kits from Bijou Basin Ranch! As seen on episode 810, Eunny demonstrates the cabled brim of the Entwined Cabled Hat made with Bijou Basin Ranch "Lhasa Wilderness" yarn, a combination of yak and bamboo that has great stitch definition and comes in vibrant colors. The Entwined Cable Hat (a free pattern download on KnittingDailyTV.com) uses two skeins of the "Lhasa Wilderness", and we're giving three lucky winners two skeins to knit their own hat.

Never knit with yak fiber before? You're in for a treat!  Watch Episode 810's How To Segment with Deborah Robson and Eunny Jang to learn about the qualities of yak fiber, why it's the perfect yarn to hand dyes, and also how to knit the unisex Entwined Cabled Hat.

Yak Fiber:
With the new ways to seperate yak fibers, Bijou Basin Ranch offers a variety of equisite yak down yarns that are both durable and soft. Yak fiber is not damaged by bleaching or dyeing, so you can get this fiber in a variety of natural and hand dyed colorways. The "Lhasa Wilderness" yak and bamboo blend comes in 20 different colors, which you can see on Bijou Basin Ranch's website. The yak fiber when blended with bamboo has a subtle sheen, is easy to knit with, and yet has the warmth that yak fiber offers. Plus, you get the unique look of handdyed yarn, with the subtle varigations even in the bright colorways.

Win the Yarn to Knit the Entwined Cabled Hat!
Three lucky winners will win two skeins of "Lhasa Wilderness" in the two colors of their choice. Comment on this blog post and tell us which colors you'd knit your Entwined Cabled Hat in and you're automatically entered to win. We'll randomly choose three winners from all the comments at noon Central Time on Tuesday, March 6, 2012 so be sure to comment before then.

This blog post and giveaway have been sponsored by Bijou Basin Ranch, a proud contributor to Knitting Daily TV's eighth season. Visit the Bijou Basin Ranch website for more yak fibers and yarns.

I generally love blue and orange together, but for this yarn, I opt for the intense purple in the back row of the picture above (called Regal) and the orange (called Salmonberry).

My knitting group convinced Jean, our LYS owner, to stock the Bijou Basin yarn. Jean generally avoids bamboo, but in this instance, the combination is great: the bamboo gives sheen and strength to the yak, which (of course) gives softness and halo. Great yarn.

I have pet Bijou Basins yak yarn, and it is wonderful! Of course, luxury yarn comes with a luxury price tag, and I haven't been able to justify it's purchase yet.  I have learned from experience that after an initial swatch, I seem better equipped to justify its purchase while Hubby looks dazed & confused saying "...but isn't that the yarn you just gave me 5 reasons why you weren't going to buy? " To which I reply "yes, darling but I also just gave you 10 reasons why I couldn't possibly leave the store without it! The cable hat is another excellent episode - how about an episode about knitting lace using lace-weight yak fiber?

Eunny's cable hat is another excellent episode, how about an episode about knit lace  using yak lace-weight yarn?

I'm interested to experience how yak lace blocks and if a yak lace piece will hold the blocked shape well upon wearing it.

I am currently knitting the "Gobi Cowl" pattern with Bijou Spun "Gobi" 70% Yak, 30% Camel.  The yarn was hard to find in stores and on line as it was a limited addition.  I called Bijou Basin Ranch and found the people there wonderful to work with.  It was evident talking with them and in the way the package arrived that they take great pride in their product.  I found this blend to be so soft to work with and durable (as I had to rip my work and start over).

If I were to win the "Lhasa Wilderness" blend I would ask to have #01, Natural Brown and #02, Natural Cream.

Thank you.

I'd love to knit one up in Sky and Steel... nice calm colors reflective of a Northern winter sky.  Great contest - thanks!

Oh wow the names alone are delish!

I'd pick Tannhauser for myself and Tristan for the hubby.  If I got a third I'd choose Parsifal for the little one as she's fond of pink pink pink!

I just got some of the Parsifal to make a scarf so I'd do a hat in Parsifal and Ruby!

I think I would choose Blueberry and Hunter. I didn't realize this ranch was so close to me! I've seen their yarn before at a LYS and it was yummy!

on Feb 28, 2012 3:20 PM

I would use Blueberry as the main color and Blush as the accent color.

I think the steel would knit up to be gorgeous and would certainly be a color to use with everything.

I would love to do it in Parsifal and Ruby!

I would use sage for the main hat color, and the variegated  tannhauser with it for the cabled brim.  Thanks for considering this!

What lovely yarn!  I'd like to use Seigfried with either Regal or Amethyst...it's hard to tell which goes better on the screen.  Many thanks!

I would kint up this cute hat with Teal as the main color and Amethyst as the accent color.  March and April can be windy and cold here in Wyoming and yak/bamboo would be the perfect fiber.  Really enjoyed the video - thanks!  Terri Cochran

Cream and Sky!

Teal and Tannhauser. I think it'd complement the teal and burnt orange sweater I'm working on nicely and it'd definitely be warm enough for next winter when I've moved to Kansas. The Teal and salmonberry would probably work as well, but I prefer my first choice overall.
