Just wondering if anyone knows a good substitute yarn for the Jade Sapphire that is used in the Winter Twilight mitts? Although I love cashmere (who doesnt), I would like to make them out of studier stuff as I dont think the yarn wil stand up to the windy and wet winters down here in Baltimore. I also dont want to mess with the pattern too much to get correct gauge.

Thanks!

Why wouldn't a sock yarn work at that gauge?

i suppose it would. I guess I'm more asking if anyone else has (or is planning ) on using another specific type of yarn. I've only been knitting since february so Im not too familiar with different types of yarns and I can only get to my LYS on saturdays.

There are some luscious Merino sock yarns that would be wonderful, especially if they were superwash.

You could use a Lionbrand acrylic/wool mix, so it's washable, but still soft and woolly. Or you could just use a nicer acrylic (there are some nice soft ones that aren't scratchy).

I would check knitpicks.com, they have some fingering weight yarns that are perfect for fair isle.
