I am trying to cast on for the Pembroke Wrap in Fall 2011 IK. I don’t
have the magazine, just the pattern. It says to use the “crochet chain
provisional method” listed in the glossary to cast on. I looked in my
other IK magazines and they don’t have it. Is this the “crochet around
the knitting needle” CO, or the “crochet a chain and pick up in the back
bar” CO, and does it really matter since it’s provisional anyway? I’m a
curious person, what can I say??? TIA for any answers.
Either way will work since, as you say, it's a provisional cast on and will be taken out anyway. When I see crochet chain cast on I immediatey think of picking up the bumps on the back of the chain although crochet around the knitting needle is probably easier all around.
Crochet chain provisional is something you remove later on. Crochet around the knitting needle cannot be taken out as far I know. So. I would make a crochet chain with waste yarn a little longer than the # of stitches in the cast on and use the chain to pick up Knit stitches after leaving about an inch or 2 of chain stitches of the crochet unused. When you remove this waster yarn, you will have live stitches for finishing
Since it says use crochet provisional method it would be this one.
Here is your link to the Crochet Provisional Cast On http://www.knittingdaily.com/glossary/crochet-provisional-cast-on.aspx
And this is the Chain Edge Cast On http://www.knittingdaily.com/glossary/chain-edge-cast-on.aspx
You can have this for reference.
And all the women who were wise of heart spun with their hands, and they kept bringing as yarn the blue thread and the wool dyed reddish purple, the coccus scarlet material and the fine linen. Ex. 35:25
Here's a video for one kind of crochet around the needle which is removable. There certainly may be others that can't be removed to expose live sts but this one works.
Thank you Salmonmac, I did many provisional with crochet around the needle. But never knew I can remove the crochet to get live stitches without a problem.
