Without a yarn winder, how and what do you use to wind your yarn into a neat ball.
I often do a butterfly, double it over, cup it in my fingers, and then begin to wrap around and around, using a couple of fingers as spacers, changing direction as needed. (Elizabeth Zimmermann has it in her books.) If you leave a long tail hanging out, you can make a center pull ball. I have also used a piece of broom handle (or cigar tube) as a Nostepinne. A folded chunk of cardboard or paper works well, also. You can lay the yarn tail in the crease, releasing it when you pull the core out. The main thing is to not wrap too tightly, rather than risk stretching your yarn, no matter which method you choose.
