Hello All,

Hey, where can I buy the reinforcing thread that has some nylon in it to knit into the heels and toes of socks?  Someone said a place in Canada has it available, but looking for quality yarn that will work. Thank you for any info!

Sincerely,

Merri

Go to http://www.elann.com and you'll find it there.

Good luck!

Hi Joyce,

Thanks for the tip.  They have only black, but then that would probably work for the darker colors of yarn.  I do appreciate it!

Some sources have suggested using a baby fingering yarn in a matching color as a carry along.  They usually have some nylon in them. Some suggest a sewing thread to help out.  A really old book I found said a silk sewing thread would also work - so maybe a fine silk yarn might help.  Hope you find what you're looking for.

Thanks for that; I'm sure I can find something!  In fact, I have some (somewhat antique) parachute thread that my great aunt had and used to crochet some 'squares' for something (doilies?). It is quite strong. I think I have saved it--and now I know why!

I'll have to try it out; if not, one of your suggestions will surely work!

 Hi Merri...

Some time ago I had found this for someone else. I haven't used this company myself but they seem to have a good color variety:

Also remember reading about some people using wooly nylon thread or serger thread. I tend to always use sock yarn ( 4ply fingering) that has a certain nylon content for better wear (15-25%).  Though I sometimes do make heavy worsted wt socks fr 100% wool. Then I add in a strand of 3-ply wool nylon sock yarn for the heel area.

Good luck w/ the parachute thread...I'm sure finding a use for it would make your great aunt happy!!!

    Take Care...Andrea

Try Wooly Nylon - it's used for sergers so you can find it in place that sells sewing notions - Jo-Anne's, for instance. It comes in a gajillion colors and is $6 or $7 for more than you are likely to use in your lifetime unless you knit socks in huge numbers. I have a neutral medium shade and a dark that I use for almost all socks and got back when a spool was about $2.79 - a long time ago!

Google Wooly Nylon - it's easily available on-line.

You have probably found what you need, but if not try calling Yarn Paradise 828-274-4213.  They have several colors of yarn specifically for reinforcing socks.

Hook 'n' Needle in Columbia, SC normally carries it in all the colors.  It is made by and put out with a 100% wool sock yarn.  I don't remember the name of the company or the yarn, but when I bought 2 skeins of the yarn, the shop owner gave me the nylon reinforcing thread.  The number is (803)772-1335.  I think she still carries it.
