Hey there,

I really want to introduce myself to the world of "knitting socks", I've been seeing a lot of cool designs.  Who can tell me, where do I start?  Which pattern to pick?  Is there a special yarn for this project? can I use any yarn?

 Thank you in advance!

Hi, Karla - I recommend starting out with a worsted weight yarn and bigger needles and knitting a pair of house socks or a holiday stocking.  That way, you get used to the basics of socks without having to struggle with finer yarns and needles.  They also knit up faster and are less frustrating to rip out.  (Should the need arise.)  Then, you can move on to the joys of other kinds of socks.  Your local library should be a good resource for books on socks, as well as this website.  (And others.)  Welcome to the fun.

Here's a very easy pattern to start with: http://www.knitaddicted.com/html/34.html

A double strand of Wool-Ease is going to make a mighty thick pair of socks, but they'd be good to start with - the number of stitches is only half of what you'd use with sock yarn, so it will go very quickly.

Something quick like this - even omitting the leg and just doing ribbing so that you have house-slippers - would be a good intro to heel and toe construction.
