Handmade Especially for You (a non-profit organization) knits/crochets comfort scarves and distributes them to shelters for abused women.  So far (in almost one year), we have donated 2350 comfort scarves to 11 shelters in S. CA.  Often, the scarves are the first personal give (muchless a handmade personal gift) the recipient has ever received and it does a lot to begin to improve the recipient's (very low) self-esteem.  The directors of the shelters marvel at this unexpected result of our donation.  The women can't believe that someone they don't even know has made something so beautiful for them.  They begin to think of themselves as having some worth after all.  The shelters build on this in their counseling to help the victims of domestic abuse change their lives.

Participate with us in helping abused women change their lives.  Our shelters have requested 1000 scarves for their Thanksgiving baskets and another 2000 for Christmas (on average, the women come to the shelters with 2.5 children).  Contact Handmade Especially for You if you need yarn (we appreciate a donation to cover the postage).  All the best yarn companies have donated absolutely beautiful yarn.  They have really supported our project.  Of course, if you want to use up your own stash, that's fine too.

We prefer scarves made in bright colors, soft yarn, an open pattern up to 5 inches wide and at least 60 inches long.  We recommend size 15 or 17 needles.

Check out our website www.handmadeespecially.org  for patterns, newsletters, publicity etc. and thanks in advance for whatever you contribute.
