My mom has asked me to knit her a hat for xmas, the only problem is she always complains that she hates the way she looks in hats.  I'm looking for a pattern that will provide warmth (she lives in Chicago) is pretty and fits different head/face shapes.  I know that's not very specific.  Has anybody tried a hat pattern that they had great results with and just loved the way it came out?  I need to be inspired!  Thank you!

It would help to know why she thinks she doesn't look good in hats. In my case it's because I have a long face and a hat without a brim makes me look like a pinhead. My favorite hat (commercially made, alas) has a fat rolled brim, nearly 2" in diameter and filled with foam, and a flat top. I have yet to knit one similar but the idea of something bulky at the edge is carried on nicely in this dayflower hat pattern. I started knitting it once but when I got to the ruffle I decided my yarn was just not working for it and I haven't found a new yarn I want to try with it yet.

What about knitting a beret type hat, it would keep your mum warm but would be away from her face which she might suit better.

If she has a wide, round face like myself,  berets and rimmed hats work.

I agree with the suggestions of berets. I know I don't llike the way I look in typical winter hats but a beret or tam works well for me. Slouchy hats are good too. There are some hats too that I have seen on Ravelry that you can wear cuffed like a regular winter hat or uncuffed and slouchy. That would give her options too with the same hat.
