Hello and a big WELCOME!
I don't know about everyone else, but I would love to see a really good top-down cast on for beginners to make socks with. I have yet to make a pair and have trouble with really loose stitches.
Just a thought and thank you for any consideration you give to this. Have a great day! ♪
KELLEIGH~♥~
Hi Deborah,
So welcome to you! I'll get back to you with some ideas. But for now just wanted to mention I looked you up on Wikipedia & About.com. I saw you wrote a book in 2009 called Knit with Deborah Norville. That is a lovely sweater you are wearing on the cover of your book. I will try to get a copy to read from my local library.
And all the women who were wise of heart spun with their hands, and they kept bringing as yarn the blue thread and the wool dyed reddish purple, the coccus scarlet material and the fine linen. Ex. 35:25
Hello,
I forgot to ask,,,,when will you be on the show? Hope I didn't miss it ;-)

Hi Kelleigh,
I love doing socks. My most favorite cast on for the top down socks is the cable cast on. I will post you a link here for you or if the computer is acting up, then it will be on the next post. http://www.knittinghelp.com/videos/cast-on Here it is. Scroll down the page until you see the "Cable Cast On". There is a written direction given as well as two videos -- one the continental method and the other is the English method. There are other cast on ways posted there as well. Hope you find one to your liking.
I prefer the cable cast on vs the knitted cast on because the cable cast on has a firmer edge but is also more flexible once knit. Once the sock is washed/blocked then the stitches all seem to line up right. The only thing you have to watch with this, is taking care not to do the cast on too tight as there will be no flexible give to it. I usually use one needle size larger to do the cast on with and the first row of stitching, then switch to the needle size you will use to knit the sock.

Zoe -- loving those socks!
Hi Zoe,
Thank you for the information and invitation. (I will join you and the others there.) I just did a cable cast-on last night for some fingerless mitts and it seems to be working for me. Yea! Once I get the mitts done, I can try my first pair of socks. Very excited!
Just wanted to say I was in JoAnn's and looking at all the goodies. I noticed some sock yarns and was pondering whether or not to purchase. Then I saw your yarn label and when I touch tested it, yours won out for softness so I picked up "Serenity" in Sapphire Art, my very FIRST sock yarn. You may not appreciate what that means, but if you knew me you would! I have been crocheting & knitting since a litte girl and have never had a smidgeon of interest in knitting a sock. Recently though, through my interchange with members here I notice that feeling is slowly beginning to change. I enjoy looking now, but still no desire for "me" to knit a sock. By way of illustration, I NEVER imagined myself eating sushi with my friends. I thought they had a screw loose! "Oh how could you!", I said. "You are going to get a serious illness". While I seriously tried reasoning them to their senses, they just laughed and replied, "You don't know what you are missing." Well now, we duck out for our favorite sushi every chance we get. I have the feeling it's going to turn out the same way now that I have this sock yarn. You know, it is just sitting here on the desk. I even tried putting it back in the bag so I wouldn't have to look at it. But then I unwrapped it again and am touching it and imagining what the colors would look like on my needles. You know I am almost done for now. I even have a name picked out should I ever actually knit them.
P.S.
I see the label content reads 50% Superwash Merino Wool 25% Bamboo, 25% Nylon, so I would not have to worry about it accidentally felting, if I ever get that far.
Well I guess I am getting there. This is what I did with the Deborah Norville Serenity in Sapphire. My first Little Slippers. I really loved watching the little striping effect as I knit these.
I am wondering how your fingerless mitts turned out? I loved doing a pair a bit ago. I did them in white with a little design in magenta.
Hi ZassZ,
Well, I am glad you asked....they came out fine even though I made a mistake after the bind-off for the thumb. I used it to my advantage and incorporated it into the design and I like it! Here's a pic...
See the basketweave stitch in there...where it shouldn't be? Ah well.
Would love to see a pic of your finished mitts as I think this will be something I do again before I really tackle socks. Might start with tube socks first
Thanks for sharing your mitts with me. I love the ribbing, nice and thick and the fun of a challenge! If you want to see my fingerless mitts, there is a pic I posted awhile ago over in Fabulous Project completed lately? It's on page 2 of that thread, which is under the KNITTING CHAT. There are 3 pics on a post from Oct. 30. Mitts are white.
I have done another pair in black but no picture of it here. I did them using short rows which was fun to do. Did you do short rows on your pink ones?
ZassZ
It was my pleasure to share my knitting with you. I saw your mitts and I love them! They look so elegant...were they hard to make?
I'm working on the scarf to match my mitts and a slouchy beret as well. The ribbing is very thick and yes, very warm. I did not do short row shaping, just worked them in the round after the bind-off for the thumb holes. I do like doing them though and may make some for my local homeless shelter.
Kelleigh,
Thank you. I like the idea to do a slouchy beret. Have you seen the one by Cathy Carron in Holiday 2008 called Floppy Toque? It's a nice slouchy beret.
The mitts were very easy to make. It was one of my own patterns. Once you get the sizing correct for your hands it is pretty easy to adjust according to yarn gauge, etc. I am sure the people will be happy to receive some nice warm mitts from you. An excellent idea. It was a pleasure talking with you too. Hope you can share your next project.
ZassZ,
You are welcome and Thank you for your compliments--I know the mitts will be appreciated as much as the hats my mom and I donate every year. I took a look at the Vogue Floppy Toque and it is nice for another project later on, but I decided to go with the Wager Hat from Yarn's End to match my mitts.
It was my pleasure to talk with you and I will share more of my projects as they are made or put up on Ravelry. Until then, have a great holiday season!
