I need to find an easier way to convert patterns to charts.

Any suggestions? Software?

I don't know about easy, but I have downloaded graph paper for Excel, and I type out my own charts. On smaller pattern repeats, I write out index cards.

I've tried the excel method - but does anyone have the typical KNITTING symbol set that will work with Excel?

I looked and looked and had to use some kind of greek something, but they weren't the same, and therefore harder to remember.

That would be cool, but I've used symbols already built in to Excel. On cables I Merge & Center however many stitches I'll be using, and write 4/4 RC. The bottom of my page reminds me that 4/4 RC = sl 4 to cn, hold to back. I also use color to differentiate between 4/4 RC and 4/4 LC.

You've got me curious. Can the symbols be written in Excel? I need a list.

Nina, that was a great suggestion about the Merge and Center for Cables.

I've been charting lace lately, and it's a challenge for me to see and remember "this decrease stitch eats two stitches below it" and "this yo stitch gets stuck in the middle ".  The chart is representative in the end, but still hard for me to "see" on the micro level.

Yes! Google "Knitting Font" and several free ones will come up. I use the set from Aire River Design in my Excel charts.

The trick for downloading these fonts (for me at least) was finding the right folder on my computer where my other fonts are stored. That way the knitting fonts will come up automatically as a font option in your Excel.

The "merge cell" technique works great too. I use it for all sorts of things, but especially for my k2togs and SSKs. I'll be glad to share with you some of the charts I've done.

Knitting on and on...

Terry
