I remember reading in a magazine years ago how to test for fiber content in mystery yarns. I just inherited a room full of "mystery" yarns in all colors, sizes and quantities. Most have no label. They were purchased for use with knitting machines and are on cones. I need to be able to test the fiber content to see if the yarns are compatible. There was a test using melting, breakage, and maybe shrinkage? I think I read it in a knitting or spinning magazine. If you know of any easy tests, please let me know. There are way to many yarns to knit swatches and wash them to find out if they will shrink. I want to be able to sort them and evaluate what is there. I appreciate any suggestions.
I'd start with the burn test since it only requires little snippets of yarn.
