"Knitting for Dummies" is very valuable to learn the basics of knitting and take you a little further into the knitting world.

I highly recommend checking out books geared towards kids for learning to knit - the Klutz knitting book by Anne Johnson is what I learned from (when I was about 25 years old). Also, Shannon Okey's Knitgrrl books are good and have more advanced techniques - even if some of the projects are a little silly.

The Knitter's Companion by Vicki Square is also useful, but don't trust the needle guage in the back (the holes are smaller than the one on my metal guage, which I trust more).

Good luck and happy knitting!
