It leaves a much smoother decreased edge. Now I need to know how to increase in a smoother way. I have a situation where I need to increase 3 stitches at the beg and the end of several rows for a stepped effect. If I just cast on as I normally would I get a very loose first stitch and a rough, jagged step.

Can anyone point me in the right direction to learn a better technique for these increases. I am hoping to find a method that would achieve a smooth effect as I have learned to do in the cast off one.

This is my first attempt at a garment. I've been doing a lot of knitting and un-knitting and strategizing but I'm stuck on this one....

I'm only listing the stitch numbers for the size I'm working on.

Divide for sleeves and body: Place first 36 sts on holder for sleeve, remove m, using the cable method, CO 3 sts for the underarm, pm for new beg of rnd, CO 3 sts for underarm, work 56 sts in patt, remove m, place next 36 sts on holder for sleeve, remove m, CO 3 sts for underarm, pm for side, CO 3 sts for underarm, work in patt to 1 st before rnd m, k1 -- 124 sts rem for lower body.

My question is.... where do I do the cable cast ons? Because of how the cable cast on works, it seems like I have to either knit the stitches I just cast on, or drag a huge piece of yarn over the back... the pattern doesn't say which. I think I'm doing something wrong because each time I try a different method, the lace pattern doesn't line up anymore.

Please help... ~ Deirdre

[It is a 2 st repeat lace pattern of 4 rows and up to this point in the
pattern, it's been having me keep 1 St st on each side of each marker
(there were 4; 2 for each sleeve). After the divide for sleeves and
body, the pattern wants me to continue putting 1 St st on either side of
the two remaining markers (for the side "seams").]

Diagonal knitting pattern

I recently downloaded a diagonal knitting pattern, and since I am still new at this knitting stuff I am stumped at what is called an edge stich. Since my sister took care of my mother during her illness I left the blanket for her to keep but she decided since my daughter is the only granddaughter that maybe I would like to give it to my daughter's baby girl. Only problem is if I do that then my son will feel hurt because he also has a baby girl. These babies are my mother's only great granddaughter's and it wouldn't be fair to give it to one and not the other.

So my question is - can I cut this afghan in half? It is knit/purl, it looks like probably 20 rows knit/ 20 rows purl, very large needles. I used to knit years ago (now I do more crocheting). I have a sewing machine as well as a surger sewing machine. I don't want to jump right in and cut it in half, I do know I would need to secure the stitches in the center before I cut anything. My thoughts were to do two rows of very large basting stitches down the center of the afghan to secure the threads and then cut between the rows. Of course I would then need to add a border of contrasting color to hide the threads. My only other option would be to find the ending row of the afghan and pull the thread and actually knit another afghan with the thread I'm unraveling and when it is about half way stop and end off the thread. I know this sound like a lot of work but I would rather figure something out so both of my children will get some sort of comfort knowing they have a little something to remember their grandmother by.

Thanks for any suggestions.

instructions

the instructions k2tog (yo and next stitch), K1* sl2 pwise wyb, k6*, rep from * to last 4 sts, sl2pwise wyb k2. I do not understand the "and next stitch" I have tried everything and never end up with 4 sts at the end.
