I have been using self striping sock yarns for quite a while and have made a number of things with them. One of my favorites is Red Heart's Heart and Sole. It comes in a wide variety of colorways from muted to bright. It can also be found a number of place both on line and in stores where Red Heart Yarns are sold. I have also used Deborah Norville's Serenity Sock yarn as well as Noro, Opal and several other brands. Knit Picks (I know here I go again!) carries a variety of self striping yarns with longer colorways that work great for wraps and light weight sweaters or socks, gloves, hats, mittens and anything else you can dream up. Their main ones are Shadow, Chroma and Felici. All come in great colorways from muted tonals to really bright hand painted.

Oh, one more thing, there is a great pattern in the newest issue of Knit Scene Accesories; Reservoir Mitts Fingerless Gloves. My youngest daughter saw them and the next thing I heard was, Mom can you? The top of the mitts are done in entrelac with self striping sock yarn. Being the mom I am, I said sure. Guess who is relearning entrelac knitting?Argh! Fortunately I happen to have the issue of Interweave Knits that has a great visual and written step by step guide to entrelac written by Euny Jang.

Anyway, I hope this helps and gives you some ideas where to look. Enjoy playing around with the yarns. I know I have. They have become a staple of my stash.

Well it depends on a few things. Some manufacturers make the sock yarn self striping to correspond to have two identical patterns in both socks. You could use the self striping feature for any number of projects that you would like to have the striped effect on. I have purchased different brands of self striping yarn and used for sweater, wraps or hat, afghan, etc. It depends on what some of the manufacturers call "long" stripe. For sweaters & wraps http://www.universalyarn.com/quality_color.php?quality=39 if you look at the pics lower down on this page you'll see a sample. Or http://www.universalyarn.com/quality_color.php?quality=274 or this one for sweaters, hats http://www.universalyarn.com/quality_color.php?quality=133 or for striped or fair isle effect http://www.universalyarn.com/quality_color.php?quality=67 For baby http://www.universalyarn.com/quality_color.php?quality=272 a baby jacket http://www.universalyarn.com/page.php?page=401

Also used Deborah Norville Serenity Sock yarn used for a baby sweater.

You browse around online or in store ask questions for specific use you want the yarn for. They will point you in the right direction.

CeI:

Can anyone confirm that so I can purchase multiple balls with confidence? Thanks so much!

You don't say here what you are making. So I can't confirm that part of your post.
