Always read through your entire instructions and see if you have a clear picture. If not, go back and read again as many times as necessary. Try out a stitch pattern to see if you can execute it properly with the correct Gauge. So when you begin your project, you will just go ahead and enjoy the knitting.

For example: Check the PATTERN STITCH or the LACE PATTERN which is ususally set out after GAUGE instructions. Then make sure you understand that portion. Then check to see in the rest of instr. how to incorporate it into the regular course of the project. Try to visualize how it fits in. It may take a little time before hand but it saves time and frustration later on. Also under GAUGE it will tell you to check gauge over PATTERN STITCH using whatever # size needles. Because the Pattern Stitch will not necessarily knit up at the same gauge as just regular knits or purls. It will throw your gauge off if you are measuring gauge over just knits and purls when you actually have a large portion of your garment in a particular Pattern Stitch.

  That's all folks

Re: Gwynedd hat - Knitscene fall 2010

cguilliams:

Is rnd 1 knit? What does it mean to work Rnd 1 over 5 sts?

cguilliams

I see what you are asking. You just need a little concentration and you will understand.

Need to think WHERE it is telling you to begin your stitch pattern for the LACE.

When you reach ROUND 6 you will be ready to start your actual lace pattern by doing a "Knit 6, begin the first round of your lace pattern instructions over 5 stitches, end with a knit 5. correct. It told you that your lace pattern is consisting of 4 Rounds which are as follows:

LACE PATTERN (worked over 5 sts) Rnds 1-3 Knit, so Rnd 1 is knit, Rnd 2 is knit, Rnd 3 is knit. Round 4 and follow the "yo, P1, p3tog, p1 yo. (5 sts)

Don't confuse your rounds of regular knitting stitches (what is before the lace pattern) with the where lace knitting starts. So after you first reach Round 6 and do the above instr. for LACE, then you begin again with *LACE PATTERN* which consists of 4 Rounds. It is really saying you are to repeat your lace pattern (which began on round 6) think of it as just where you began following pattern for lace section) til 7 in" is reached.

We don't know what the first 5 rounds say

cguilliams:

The first time it is mentioned in the knitting directions is in Rnd 6

You know you are working around when instructions tell you to use CIRCULAR needles. Draw a circle on paper, lay your needles on top of circle. You will join your last stitch to the first stitch once you have knit all the way around on your first round. Continue around without turning anything just round, round, round. Not like knitting back and forth on straight needles in a row. You do not turn your needles and go back the way you came unless you do short rows which is another thing.

So YES, Rnd 1 is knit, Rnd 2 is knit, Rnd 3 is knit OF YOUR LACE PATTERN. So whatever it told you to do before you got to round 6 you probably only do once, then your lace for 7 inches, then what ever else is next.

Re: Gwynedd hat - Knitscene fall 2010

cguilliams:

what is mean by "round" in the lace pattern?

Hi cguilliams,

A round is the same thing as a row. So when the pattern instructions say

cguilliams:

Rnd 6, where it says K6, work Rnd 1 of lace pattern over 5 sts, k5.

   to translate this it means:

Row 6: knit 6 stitches, then knit the first round/row of the lace pattern (as per Rnds 1-3) over the next 5 stitches, end with knit 5.

Then it says to repeat Round 6. Go to what Rnd 6 says and follow it. (as I wrote out.)

I can't help you much more than that because I don't know what the Rnds 1-3, Rnd 4 ..... ect are. By labeling the Rounds/Rows as numbers, a knitter can keep track of where they are at.

Hope this helps, Zoe

Is rnd 1 knit? What does it mean to work Rnd 1 over 5 sts?

Next, instructions say repeat Rnd 6, working lace sections in pattern until measures 7 inches.

Guess my biggest question is what is mean by "round" in the lace pattern?
