Conair has a hair braider. It is battery operated. Leclerc bobbins fit nicely on this. It also works well for fringe. You can find one for somewhere between $8-15.

Your husband's or wife's power drill. I use mine with a bit of masking tape on one of the drivers. Whether it is battery or plug in, you can find one for around $25.

Needless to say, these are a far cry from the $180 hand operated and $380 electric bobbin winders on the market. I believe in multi-taskers much like Alton Brown's cooking show.

FS: Looms and Spinning Wheel

TWO LOOMS FOR SALE: 1) Beka 60" Weaving Width Cherry Wood Loom, 8 Harnesses, 10 Treadles. Approx. dimensions are 66" wide x 46" deep x 46" high. Includes texsolv tie-up cords, 1000 new flat steel heddles, one reed (sectional beam not included). Located in central NJ. hip.com, I am not associated with uship.com in anyway. Similar loom would be over $7000 new. My price is $5,000. Very Good condition.

2) Gilmore 8 harness, 10 treadle loom for weaving rugs and fabrics. Approx. Dimensions: 47" weaving width, 53" wide x 44" deep x 37" high. Includes reed, shuttle, heddles, sectional warp beam. One of the first looms made by Mr. Gilmore in the 1930's, works great. Very Good condition. New price for a Gilmore loom like this would be almost $3,000. My price is $2,000.

3) Cherry wood 26" spinning wheel handmade by Tom Siske in 1988. Tom is an excellent wood crafter and his spinning wheels are prized among spinners who own or are familiar with them. This wheel produces fine to worsted weight yarns, and does a great job at it. It is very smooth, and I have personally spun yarn almost as fine as thread on this wheel. After 20 years, it has a few small dings that are barely noticeable, but except for those, it is in great condition. It has one whorl that came with it and that's the only one I have used, but you could have another whorl made if you wanted. It includes seven bobbins. no lazy kate because it didn't come with one. You can make your own lazy kate, have one made to match the wheel, or keep the bobbins in a basket like I do. Comparable spinning wheel purchased new would cost about $1,700.00.

See pictures of them in the looms and spinning sections of my website at http://mybigsale.angelfire.com

Arthur Allen Looms

Can someone tell me about Arthur Allen Looms? My obsession with yarn began when I had a child loom about a decade ago. it broke, and got misplaced over the years. I'm interested in buying one again, but I'm wondering: are they worth it? How long of a peice can you knit on a generic lap loom? A full scarf, or just a towel sized scrap? Do they require normal, purchasable yarns, or do I have to buy the special refill packs that the companies are always trying to sell? the model I'm looking at is the harrisville 7.5 " easy weaver loom, but I can't find answers to these questions anywhere online. Does anyone have experience with them, or anything similar?
Louet, Leclerk, Harisville, Schacht are the prominent ones. Could I have some discussion from the weavers out there about the likes/dislikes of their looms? I want to learn.

I am new to this site although I have been weaving for 20 years on and off. I also knit, crochet, tat, quilt, etc. As I am recently retired from my day job, there is more time to do the things I really love. My children have cooperated by giving me my first 3 grandbabies in the past 18 mos. SO-now I have little people to create for. Currently I have baby blanket in Monk's Belt Bamboo yarn on the loom, one quilt on the frame and another cut and ready to piece, as well as a crocheted blanket in really soft yarn for baby #3 due in Nov. My daughter in Maine has Cashmere goats and she provides me with yarn from the goats to knit or crochet into scarves and hats which they then sell at Farmer's market and their Farm Store. I am located in Western North Carolina. Would love to hear what other folks are doing.

Susan has been "weaving/thinking about weaving/trying to understand weaving" for about ten years. She loves overshot, and is learning about old Colonial American drafts. One recent project included a tartan scarf. On her loom right now is a set of napkins using an eight-shaft pattern. Congrats Susan!

Yarn of the Hour - Nov/Dec Handwoven p. 9

Hello. I am new to the forum and think I am looking forward to it. I say think, because I don't find that it has been very user friendly so far. I got to this place by trying to visit www.knittingdaily.com/yarnofthehour but when I go there it says the contest is closed. The only option it offers is for me to sign up for Knitting Daily - which I am already a member of. So...why is it not available if p. 9 of my new issue of Handwoven tells me it is? Any ideas? Thanks. Also, the time this stamps as posted says 3:00 app. I am actually posting this at 11:00 app. Eastern time - USA.

just joined

I'm Leslie Mendelson from Rochester, NY. I've been weaving since 1974 and have both a Herald and Harrisville loom. I spin, knit, crochet, and tat, do kumihimo and temari balls. Right now I'm knitting a Fair Isle vest (Alice Starmore) which I love, and am about to start curtains for my french doors, which open out onto my deck. I know this sounds ambitious, but I can always dream, can't I?

Yarn of the Hour

I'm glad to see that there is going to be some weaving content on the forums. I'm a new weaver and I've made a few scarves. I'd like to try a tea towel pattern and I hope to take some weaving classes in the new year.

Caroline Morse of Sandown, New Hampshire! She won the eco-cotton yarns featured in the September/October 2008 issue of Handwoven. Thanks to our suppliers for allowing us to pass on these yarns to a lucky reader: Nashua Handknits, Rowan, Ecobuterfly.com, Blue Sky Alpaca, O-Wool; Tahki Yarns, Chamomile Connection, Cotton Clouds, and Fox Fibre.

Four years ago she took the plunge and bought a Harrisville floor loom.
