The pattern reads: "Shape neck - keeping to pattern work 36 sts, sl center 23 sts onto a st holder, attach 2nd ball and work last 36 sts." (so far so good..I managed this part). "Working separately but at same time, bind off 2 sts at each neck edge twice, then dec one st at same edges every other row once - 31 sts each side. knit 6 rows in garterst. BO all sts

Do I start decreasing on the purl side? I have 36 sts on each side, if I then BO 2 sts twice = 32 sts, then dec 1 = 31 sts. So I only dec once? When do I work with the 23 sts on the stitch holder? The finishing states: "with right side facing and smaller needles, pick up 91 sts along neck edge. knit 6 rows in garter st. BO" Is this where I pick up the 23 stitches?

I'm probably making this harder than it reall is....HELP!

And I have a couple of questions about determining yardage and needle choice.

Project: I would like to knit lace curtains + valances for two windows. Another matching valance to cover one small shelf in a built-in shelving unit. Opptionally, thinking about adding an inset lace panel in the top of the shower curtain, and if there is enough yarn left over, I might trim some towels with a band of lace.

The lace pattern I've chosen is called "Cabled Feather." A multiple of 18, (minimum of 2 multiples) with 8 row repeat.

As to the design, I was thinking that I would work the first three inches at the bottom in the lace pattern, with the balance of the curtain panel or valance worked in stockinette, interspersed with a verticle line of pearl stitch every 2 inches (or so) across the body; echoing the verticle lines of the bead board of the lower half of the wall. But I'm open to other design suggestions.

Overall, the curtains should have a lacy country feel, allowing plenty of light, while still providing the necessary privacy from the outside. How do I determine what weight yarn would best achieve these goals and which needle size to use?

Cost of course will be a serious consideration. I think cotton or a cotton blend would be a good choice, for washability and durability, though it might make working the lace more difficult. (I want the project to be fun, not a bear!)

Finally, how do I calculate yardage needed for the total project?

Thanks in advance for your help, advice and suggestions!

I really like Nicholas's Fingerless Gloves. But, I came to a part in the pattern where I'm a little muttled. When doing the right hand glove, I've come to the "RIng Finger:" portion -- It says: "Rnd 1: P1, sl 1, k2, psso, p1, put next 25 sts on waste yarn, pick up and knit 2 sts to cover gap bet ring and middle fingers, knit last 6 sts, CO 2 sts to cover gap bet pinkie and ring fingers " -- the part that bothers me is - didn't I already cover the gap bet the pinkie and ring finger in the "Upper Hand:" section? and where it says to "pick up and knit 2 sts to cover gap bet ring and middle fingers" - shouldn't this be - CO 2 sts to cover gap bet ring and middle fingers? Please let me know what to do. Maybe I'm not understanding the instructions here, but, everything seemed correct up to this point.

Thanks!
