I'm having some trouble with this pattern and wondered if someone who has made them could help out. I have knit the slipper surround twice trying to figure it out.....When I do the short rows, I run out of stitches in between the markers by row 4, I believe it is.
Also, if you start the short row section, and k 35, beginning from the center of the toe, it ends up off center. When you begin the slipper surround, this is where I was beginning my round. Maybe I am off here....
If I do some power knitting, I could get one done for Christmas! :)
I'm afraid I haven't done these (yet) but was hoping to be able to help a bit. I so get the "trying to make it before Xmas"....that's where I am!
Guessing that you are making the child's size since you mention "knit 35". At the end of knit 35...you won't be quite @ the center of the heel. The next part: "knit 6 sts" that will be centered on your heel.
If I'm right that you are making the kids sz...then you are only supposed to work the first 3 short rows...that's why you are running out of sts. Read over your pattern again near the end of short row # 3. Under "Child's Size only" @ the end of that paragraph it says "skip rem short row instructions". easy to miss I know..especially when rushing @ the holiday!!!
If this doesn't solve everything I suggest you check your st counts in several places...making sure that you are using the proper sz. The last line on p 80 gives #'s to check before starting the heel.
Hope this helps...hard to "see" it all in my head!!! Let me know. If you're still stuck after Xmas...we'll make a pr tog.
Take Care, Andrea
Thanks so much for your reply! It would be so great to have a cyber knitting buddy for these. As it turned out, I had to have an emergency appendectomy before Christmas, if you can believe it! So, I left these slippers be. I am now back to almost full strength and have some rest time to knit before I go back to work full time.
My heavens, you must be right. I made the soles the smallest size. I think I'll have to redo those and start again.
The 35 I was referring to was on the 1st short row though, where technically, it should have matched up to the smallest size. That still seems to be a problem.
I think what I'll do is make a copy, highlight the one I want to make and just begin all over. My mom's birthday is February 2nd, so I'll shoot for that.
Let me know if you're interested further in knitting them, or just how they come out!
So sorry to hear about your emergency surgery. Actually I really sympathize! Several yrs ago, one of my best friends called me to come up to her house early afternoon of Dec 24th. We all had a great Xmas dinner planned for the next day as my friend had won one of those "turduckens" when they were first "invented". It was supposed to be worth $200...novelty of it I suppose? Anyway, my friend is a nurse + when I got there she started telling me things to check as she suspected her appendix. The "checks" proved BAD so off to the hospital we go. Finally they took her in to surgery after several hrs. At 10 min before midnite on Xmas Eve, her son + I got to see her for 2 min when she came down from surgery. I never did get to try "turducken" but my friend is OK today so I'm happy.
I would like to make these slippers...but think I need to finish those Herringbone Rib socks I started to help someone figure out the pattern. I do like them but they've gone slowly due to holiday gift knitting + health. Nothing like your surgery...just ongoing Enviro/ Fibromyalgia/ Allergies. Sinus infection/ migraine right now because of it...yuck!
Are you using the yarn called for or what? I know I can't get that anywhere close...but have plenty of yarn in this house!!! Going by the yardage/ wt ratio it seems like it would be a heavy worsted knit on smaller than called for needles. Does that fit w/ you've seen using the pattern? If my health cooperates...I'm going to try + do the other sock this week...then start the slippers. I'll do the ladies too so we are tog. If you have any other "hiccups" let me know + I'll see if I can figure it out. You have a deadline...I don't. Still have one Xmas gift to finish sewing...but it's a good friend ( the one above) so she won't care!
Your Mum's B-Day is a special day to me also. I have a friend fr childhood who now lives in California...that is also her B-Day. The slippers look very comfortable + I love anything w/ cables. I'm sure your Mum will be very happy to get them.

Hi again Carrie...
Just checking in w/ you so you don't think I forgot about you! I'm just over 1/2 way down the foot of the 2nd sock...going as fast as I can. Got a little waylaid when good neighbors of ours had their first granddaughter. Took a bit of time + made them a pr of pink + white booties. Very appreciated...so worth it. Back to socks...2 days more max...I hope.
How are you getting along w/ your slippers + your recovery? I did look up the yarn called for in the pattern to see the wt. Haven't decided yet on what I'll use as a substitute.
Take Care, Andrea
Boy, that's fast! Good job. I love knitting socks, too.
I am knitting a few hats that I had special orders for, so busy too! I did take out the slipper bottoms, and started all over. Have the first bottom done and started to pick up the surround. The yarn I'm using is Lion Brand Cashmere that I had around. Exactly what you said is what I did, heavy worsted same needles as what it calls for.
Recovery is great! And, I'm back to work, so that's good. How are you feeling? I am a massage therapist and yoga teacher, so am very into that for Fibro...Don't know if you've ever tried it.
Thanks for keeping in touch! I may have some time this weekend to work on them again, I'll let you know when I get up to the short rows.....
Just touching base w/ an update...as we are both going in multiple directions! I did finish the socks except for grafting. Don't want to break yarn/ color sequence till I make a test pr of anklets fr the same yarn to test for shrinkage. They will be on the knitting machine + plain...so much quicker.
Aran slippers...have to admit I'm only using RH acrylic...hey...it was there + the slippers will probably be donated as I can't sell w/ someone else's patt. Safer to figure on washer/ dryer. I made one sole + surround over the last 2 days. The surrounds definately need "quiet time". I also don't quite get the way the patt has the decs. For the womens sz you will be dec'ing a total of 10 sts...5 each end of the same side of the foot??? Then it says that you make both surrounds the same....that means that you will have the decs on the outside of the foot on the right foot + the inside of the foot on the left foot...not even...I hate not even!!! I did the 1st dec row as called for. Then the next 2...I mirror imaged to the other side of the foot...then back to the orig side for the last 2. The 1st row doesn't matter...but after that make sure you work 2 dec rows right after each other/ same side to cover up the pattern st distortion. I will reverse them all for the left foot. Another possible would be just to center them all @ toe + heel. Will make this pr as I've started to make sure center isn't bad...but next time!!! The short rows worked out fine w/ only one small rip-out. My husband "dared" to talk to me...in his defense he was trying to get ready for work!!! The only hiccup I've found so far was on the final rnd of seed st before BO. I had to work 2 sts tog @ the toe to make the st patt continue. Not sure if it was me or not?!?! Anyway 1 st wasn't going to be missed!
Happier note...I also made 1 sock fr the Anne Budd Baby's First Socks patt they gave here a few days ago. Really cute + stretchy.I used vintage Kroy in Rose Pink. No babies here...but will be sending them to a friend for her cute little girl.
Let me know when you get to this point...no rush...we both have other things to keep doing in the meantime. Feel free to ask if you have ???'s/ etc.
Almost forgot re: Fibromyalgia. YES, we definately do massage + have for yrs. Actually do some @ home too...we have our own massage table always set-up. Also go to a massage therapist about 1/mth. As to yoga...no. With my Enviro Illness I don't do group anything!!! I am very flexible for 51 even w/o Fibromyalgia I've been told. My chiropractor is also a friend + she calls me "Gumby" to tease me. I don't do "official exercises" but do work @ stretching during "life"...know it's important. I can't take even a Tylenol due to allergies + am in pain 24/7...so have to do something to counter it. I fell Dec 24th/ 1992 + that triggered all this. Started massage therapy '94. I saw a "specialist" in it (2 drive fr here) for several yrs till couldn't afford to anymore. He was very good @ teaching me + kept pushing me to go to school for it. I was too sick by then...but am very glad for what I've learned to help myself/ my husband/ + friends.

Oh boy, I thougth I lost this post, I had kept it open in a tab, but it got closed, and I almost couldn't find the thread! Man. Ok, so I'm a bit behind schedule, but! Ripped everything out that I had, and started over. I did one bottom and one surround, and it worked out well. Yes, there seems to be some issue with the seed stitch matching up, but I don't thing anyone can tell. It is a bit bigger than I had hoped, but my mom's foot is bigger than mine, so I hope it will work out. I'm going to start the cable top, and get at least ONE done for her birthday. :)
Hope you're well,
Didn't realize it was you I'de just answered about finding old posts!!! As well if you "lose me" again you could type in "Aran Slippers from Knit Gifts" in the search box + you'de probably get this as one of your choices.
Thanks for the update on where you are. I've been eyeing the slipper pc on my coffee table + thinking hmmm...Feb 2nd !!! I didn't want to get ahead + forget what I'de done in case you had a ? about something I'de done days ago. No worries though...I have more than enough other projects to keep me busy !!! Maybe tomorrow I'll start my 1st cable top.
If you give your Mum 1...then you'll have pressure to get the 2nd one finished anyway!!! probably the 2nd one will go much quicker anyway..all the glitches will be worked out. You said yours is made fr 100% wool...right? So if it's a tiny bit big...washing may solve that....or could solve that !!! Built in shrinkage allowance...
Where are you? Hiding + knitting perhaps?!?!
I've gotten all my pcs knit but not sewn tog. I figured out what I'd done wrong on the 1st surround. I had put M's @ toe + heel to keep track of the #'s when pu sts. So that skewed the directions ie: "work to 2nd M". My decs were ending up on one side...not good...so I'de "invented". The reason for having to work 2 sts tog @ the toe on the final rnd was because of the way the patt changed the rnd "beg/end" fr toe to heel. I liked the look of the 2nd surround a bit better so ripped + redid the 1st one. Both had 2 sts worked tog @ the toe to keep st patt continuity. I have to say that no pattern's ever scare me off w/ being difficult....but this one I just didn't find all that easy/ fun to follow. Just didn't flow for me. Nice to have the surround already joined to the sole w/o sewing...wish the top was too!!!
Let me know how you're doing on yours. Happy B-Day (almost) to your Mum!!!
Take care, Andrea
Hi there, Andrea,
Well, my slipper is drying as we speak. Except for not having enough to finish it in blue, and adding the top in grey, all went well. I'll have to post a picture when it's dry.
The thing is huge, and isn't going to fit. I used the LB cashmere blend, so, I may try to shrink it and see what happens.....
I also have one sock done that I started a while back, so I'm going to give her two mismatched things! :) hahaha
She's a crafter, though, so she'll understand.
Thanks for your help and knitting along with me!
2 years back my mom has knitted a crochet frock for me and i love to wear that.. But now this year i have gained some weight and scared to wear that it could be losened.. its designed and doesnt remain as it was before..
