I have trouble with the stockinette stitch.  Do men wear a plain, simple purl stitch hat?

Sure, if you do all purl rows, you'll get garter stitch and that's reasonable for a man's hat. But what about stockinette? There are lots of videos and tutorials online if you just Google "stockinette stitch". Here's one that seems helpful.
