Confused Beginner!

I have just learned how to do the knit stitch and the purl stitch. I just read something that talked about knitting the knits and purling the purls and I am still confused about how I can use that. I was hoping someone can break that down for me. And when I start a project how do I know which stitch to use. There is so much to learn! Any insight is greatly appreciated.

and also a link the knitting the knits and purling the purls. It's really just a way to say "work the stitches as they are presented to you". If you see a V, knit it and if you see a stitch that has a little loop around it, purl it.

Knitting into knits and purling into purls is a technique for keeping track of where you are when you are doing ribbing. Once you've established the ribbing pattern, if you continue to knit into knits and purl into purls you will maintain that pattern without having to keep track. But it helps to know what the knit and purl stitches look like first. Those videos might help.

I would like to say "Congratulations" to you on learning the knit & purl stitch!  You are well on your way to an enjoyable endeavor of learning how to do so many things concerning knitting, crocheting, or whatever you may also branch out to do from knitting.  I find that knitters not only enjoy knitting, but some crochet, needlepoint, weave, spin, rug hook, sew, bead, paint, draw.   So as the others posted above, keep on learning!
