I use the "Magic cast-on for Toe-up socks" to make hats from the top down.  I found instructions here:  http://www.knitty.com/ISSUEspring06/FEATmagiccaston.html

I cast on only 4 (two per needle) to form an octagon or 6 (3 per needle) to form a hexagon.  As long as you keep increasing each round, you should have a flat circle...actally hexagon or octagon.

I hope this helps!

Knitting flat circles is a breeze.  Run a search for coasters and you'll easily find a pattern.  I have one that I worked out on Excel but don't have it with me but will post when I get home tonight.  Please email me at nwmshp@gmail.com  me to remind me if I forget.  I have it on my computer and will email it to you - it will make up to a 26" flat circle but you can stop anywhere.

Angie, did you get my email last night?  Please let me know if it makes sense and helped.  I'll try to post pics of the washcloth I made this weekend.
