I'm a Pre-beginner, having made one (all knitting) scarf over the past few years, only because I couldn't find an affordable short warm scarf. I just finished it, put it in a lukewarm bath of Palmolive and, to my horror, found the wool almost dissolving and the scarf stretching to almost twice its length!
The type of Palmolive is Ultra Palmolive Oxy and I now notice no word about "fine washables" on the label. I'm worried I stripped the Merino wool of its oil. Is there any way I can correct this terrible mistake so oil is returned to the wool, eg with a hair conditioner or a soy-based soap? Can the scarf be restored to its prewashed condition and size?
Any detailed suggestions would be appreciated!

The stitches may relax when you wash the scarf but the length usually doesn't stretch out appreciably. Garter stitch (knit every row) is usually very springy unless it's knit on larger needles compared to the weight of the yarn. Did you let the scarf dry flat?
