I've knitted a cowl scarf on straight needles and now want to halve the length (right where a new skein was begun at the edge). Is there any way to "unknit" from the place where the new skein was attached in order to separate knitting into two pcs rather than rip out many rows of knitting? (I could then have two cowls the same size.) Thank you!
Yes, there is a way to do this. This article shows you how and it also now has an added video to help demonstrate.

You'll probably have to add in new yarn to finish off the ends of both sides but I've done this for sweaters and it works very well.
Salmonmac, thank you so much! I will check the link. This will save me so much time, as my stitches were tiny and a lot of hours have already gone into it.
