Hi I am new to knitting daily. well new to knitting period. I picked up a book from Knitting daily out of my local Joanns and wanted to get started right a way on a hat pattern for my son. I thought I knew how to read the patterns and found out real quick that I don't. My question is... when I work a circular knitting pattern do I work all the rows right to left or left to right or right to left, left to right? there is nothing written. what is the rule of thumb?

When you work with circular needles,  you work right to left and the "right side" of the fabric is always facing you.  When you work with 2 straight needles you also work right to left , but every other row the "wrong side" is facing you.   If you're following a chart, you read the chart right to left also.   Hope this helps.
