I really think it would be great is ALL patterns showed the Weight number of the Yarn used, the approximate yardage, and a schematic..  I think the schematic is a great aid for beginners, and there are times I just can't afford the $30 a hank  of yarn the original was knit in.  Well actually, I can NEVER afford a hank of yarn for $30, but that's not the point.  I find a great pattern, then I have to try and track down the yarn used and the yardage per skein/hank and convert it to what I can afford or have.  I'm not lazy, I'm just a sometime frustrated beginner.

The yarn look up function on Ravelry makes it easy to find yarns and get the weight and yardage, all in one place. Since not all yarn companies use the number system for yarn weights, the gauge is the best number to go by.

I agree about schematics. They should be given for every pattern and not just to help beginners. They're invaluable for eall knitters.
