Diagrams vs. written instructions

I've been crocheting since a kid (now a grandma) and only in the last couple of years have I had to try and translate a diagram into something that makes sense to me.  I bought a Scandinavian book with a lovely pattern last year and after numerous attempts at deciphering the diagram, gave up. 

Does anyone out there know of a reference I can utilize to learn this reading skill?  I can work up most any pattern, as long as I understand it!

Thanks to any and all who can help this old dog learn a new trick...

I had that problem recently too, I found a pattern online and downloaded the PDF only to be hit with a diagram and no text. Quite the shock. I found MyPicot to be very useful (look under tutorials), though you have to mind the UK/US differences in terminology.

I am new to reading graphs too. How did it go after looking at the tutorial?
